Facts and stories are thin here and mostly it is a memoir of the author about visiting the octopuses in the aquarium. Too bad. Minor Mage by T. Kingfisher. T. Kingfisher is one of my favorites. She tells good stories and - a miracle - doesn't kill the mother so the kid can go on an adventure. The kid, Oliver, is 12. He is a minor mage and has a nine-banded armadillo as a familiar. It is a wonderful fairy tale. “He wrapped his arms around his head and wished for his mother, which only made him feel younger and more hopeless. A real wizard wouldn't be huddled in a ditch wishing for his mother. (In this, at least, Oliver was dead wrongーmany wizards over the ages, some of them very major wizards indeed, have found themselves curled in ditches and wishing desperately for their mothers. The Gray House by Mariam Petrosyan When I finished reading the first page, I closed the book and froze. This book was written for me, I whispered. To myself, to the book, to Mariam. This book is the strangest mirror, reflecting reality and dreams in constat dance of the light. It is also a book about a house for physically and mentally disabled children. Mariam wrote this book for 20 years, in fits and starts and the only reason she finished writing it was because it was going to printers. I will probably read this book for 20 years too. Eat This Poem: A Literary Feast of Recipes Inspired by Poetry by Nicole Gulotta *** I so wanted to love this book. A mix of poetry and cooking seems to be made for me. Alas, ultimately, I was not wowed by the flavour of this book. Also, I will never understand how she had the strength not to include "This is just to say" by William Carlos Williams. I would not be so strong. I did love a few poems here. Here is one of them. The Onion by MARGARET GIBSON Mornings when sky is white as dried gristle and the air’s unhealthy, coast smothered, and you gone                 I could stay in bed and be the woman who aches for no reason, each day a small death of love, cold rage for dinner, coffee and continental indifference at dawn. Or dream lazily a market day— bins of fruit and celery, poultry strung up, loops of garlic and peppers. I’d select one yellow onion, fist-sized, test its sleek hardness, haggle, and settle a fair price. Yesterday, a long day measured by shovel and mattock, a wrestle with roots— calm and dizzy when I bent over to loosen my shoes at the finish—I thought if there were splendors, what few there were, knowledge of them in me like fire in flint                 I would have them… and now I’d say the onion, I’d have that, too.
