American Beauty/American Psycho Review
Another Fall Out Boy record? Oh shit, this is going to end badly. Oh yes, it will, I can assure you on that. Except that it won't, or at least it'll be in much better shape than a new Green Day record. Yes, you've heard that Green Day fans, come at me.
American Beauty/American Psycho is newest installment in Fall Out Boy's discography, and like the group's recent albums, their sound is evolving. The scary part is that nobody knows what the hell the end product is going to be.
The album goes further in depth from "Save Rock and Roll" with the band experimenting with electronic/dance music with more hip hop mixed into this with the use of sampling. Which I think it's interesting considering that it's rare for a rock band to use so much sampling that it would be P. Diddy to shame.
The whole album sounds the same, which I guess that was Stump's goal when recording the album. Not that it makes the album, at least the album is not all over the place and for once, it sounds like a Fall Out Boy record that is consistent most of the time. Tracks like 'The Kids Aren't Alright', 'Favorite Record', and 'Novocaine' were some of the more entertaining songs that demonstrated the band's new-found interest in sampling and the end-result is a heavily layered and complex album that shows the band's maturity, musically and lyrically (in some songs).
Honestly, out of all the rock bands playing right now, Fall Out Boy is making some of the most fascinating music that will continue well into the next decade.
Even then, I also honestly feel that this album lacks emotion and guidance. All that emotion that early Fall Out Boy had seems to have faded away and now the music has become in a sense, generic. Perhaps, the cause of that is there's no direction in the album and the band is lost in trying to find their perfect place by experimenting with sampling which, in effect, makes the album loses its meaning and causes the songwriting to be weak most of the time.
Despite those huge flaws in this album, this is Fall Out Boy's best album to date, and they're planning on moving forward and thinking out of the box.
74/100
