   It was easier than feeling anything. It hadn’t worked, of course, Steve had told him that, but he kept trying. He wished for the numbness it used to bring, so that he just didn’t have to deal with this anymore. Because he wasn’t strong enough to.

   “I never asked him to,” he replied, his voice empty and defeated. “I never asked you to. Maybe you both shouldn’t have bothered. It’s not like what I am can be fixed anyway.”

   His hope had dwindled all too far, and now he was stood on the edge of a precipice. If someone didn’t pull him back, there’s be no way to get Bucky back from the world of the Winter Soldier. And he wasn’t willing to help himself. 

   “I don’t feel human anymore,” he continued, staring at his mismatched hands. “If I was human, I wouldn’t be here. I wouldn’t be a myth around the world, I wouldn’t be... this.”
