it's well past noon. woke up a half hour ago from a buzzing phone yearning for attention. starting to catch a cold, bodily retribution for putting all sleep to the wayside i imagine. didn't brush my teeth last night and the lingering taste of beer and pizza was enough to make my stomach turn. weird dreams. incredibly weird dreams. 

i have only one friend who is genuinely curious about the world around him. he's socially inept and eccentric and yes, entirely too self-indulgent. all this goes gravely unnoticed or under appreciated by those around him. a small tragedy.

it amazes me how stagnated our society has become (yes passive voice). how my university, an institution of higher learning that's purpose is simply to promote and foster thinking, misses the point. most people here want degrees rather than the acquisition of knowledge. silver badges of approval to show to some potential employer. so lower/working class living will remain something only to be experienced through films and the media.

day to day living has become an active pursuit for distractions from conscious thought. we do drugs, we avidly keep up with trends, we have shallow conversations of little importance. this i speak of is what Heidegger calls falling prey, i.e. becoming absorbed entirely with being-with-others. this also closely resembles Huxley's society in Brave New World. a society with all of it's members existing as brain dead cogs in a machine that will do anything to prevent the burden of thinking. 

humanity's ailments are not becoming fixed. economic inequality is only being perpetuated. global atrocities are carried out daily with mere shrugs of indifference. progress has halted.

when i question the purpose of our existence i find no answer. but i do cling to how huxley sarcastically states it  as "some intensification and refining of consciousness, some enlargement of knowledge" (Brave New World).

this is why i adore philosophy and why i berate myself for not taking to it earlier. philosophy is to think, to ponder the world around you. other taught discourses fall short in this simple, yet beautifully crucial component.

all my writing of this nature tries to be stream of consciousness. a method of venting my frustrations and sources of day to day anxiety. it is never as cohesive and effective as i wish. something nonetheless to work at. for now, shower and then my novel.
