Jacen Recommends FO3 Mods
Here in this post I will list out the mods I have personally played and enjoyed. Some feel like they are necessary to better enjoy the game, while others are simply fun. All mods derive from Nexus Mods unless otherwise stated.
I recommend you use the Nexus Mod Manager (or Fallout Mod Manager) for ease of install. If FOSE is mentioned, it means Fallout Script Enhancer and can be downloaded here. If ArchiveInvalidation Invalidated is mentioned, you will need to download it here and it is used for new downloaded textures.
It is also recommended that you use BOSS and FO3Edit if you use a lot of mods. BOSS is for load order, FO3Edit is for cleaning mods for compatibility and speed purposes. Once you learn how to use FO3Edit and BOSS, you can do any other Edit (such as NVEdit or TESedit).
Some mods require you have all of the DLC loaded to play them (you can't just have them on the computer, they must be activated and load up during play). So be aware of that and doublecheck before you download. Also, you will have to go through certain steps so that GFWL is not managing your DLCs. Otherwise some mods will not recognize you have the DLC. You can find a walkthrough here. FOSE will auto-disable games for windows live, so if you already have a save file look at the previous linked walkthrough for how to move your saves around otherwise they will seem to have been deleted when you go to play with FOSE.
None of the mods listed here conflict with each other unless otherwise stated.
The mods are separated into categories as given by Nexus Mods.
Animation
Iron Sights- look directly down the barrel of your gun, rather than an awkward third person view. Requires FOSE and ArchiveInvalidation Invalidated. Made to look like the Iron Sights in Fallout New Vegas.
Buildings
1000 Hours- A new store has opened in Megaton (if you didn't blow it up anyways!). Open 24 hours and with more caps than you can shake a stick at, you'll probably use this store more than any other in the world combined. Be aware it will change the area for Megaton and can conflict with other Megaton mods.
DCInteriors- Disappointed when you see a bunch of buildings in the distance and want to explore them only to see them boarded up and inaccessible? Well, this mod changes that. It adds a huge number of interiors to buildings throughout the wasteland. It has multiple versions depending on tastes and setup.
Megaton House and Theme Overhaul- Feel like your home in Megaton is dingy and tiny? Well, not with the overhaul! It is now more than twice as large (it's bigger on the inside) and the various themes you can buy are now even more in-depth. The original modder no longer supports the mod, but has given another modder permission to update/patch it. The file is here.
Franklin Mall- If you know DC, you know there are a lot of malls. Yet none of them you can really wander through that look like the malls we know today. This mod changes that. You can now find a multi-level mall in downtown DC. The mod page gives the location. Or you can try to find it on your own. Your choice.
Gameplay Effects & Changes
Fellout- Tired of your screen having a pale hazy green on it? This mod fixes that. It clears the air around you. No more green, just regular blue skies. Also works indoors for clearer hallways. No more green!
Fallout 3 Wanderers Edition- This is a major overhaul of the classic Fallout 3 gameplay. If it's your first time playing, it is recommended you wait for your next playthrough to install this, as it changes so much about the game. More than I can explain here without taking up the whole post. In general, it spices up the gameplay and adds a bunch of new areas to explore. FOSE required. Beware this comes in parts and also be sure to pick up the hotfix.
New Lands
A World of Pain- Doesn't just add new areas, but new enemies and other things. Amps up the challenge to the game. Not recommended for brand new players, also not recommended to use both AWOP and NWE together until you've had experience playing both separately. Unless you really love a challenge (or you were silly like me and loaded them at the same time cause how bad could it be?). Most files in this category end up being rather large, but AWOP strives to use as much vanilla content as possible so that the file itself is small. Quite a bonus for those with limited space but still want to get a juicy mod.
Alton, IL- Head West, young man. This mod feels more like an expansion on par with The Pitt. A whole new area, whole new quests, whole new people, the works! Be sure to save before leaving DC in case of trouble. It will be next to impossible to get back until you finish the questline.
CEI (caesarrulez excessive interiors)- Adds even more places to explore in the same vein as DCinteriors and AWOP. While it mentions an overhaul, I'd be careful as many have expressed issues with the overhaul.
Misc/Other
Dogmeat Armor- Feel like Dogmeat is too squishy? Give him some armor! With the armor he is now even more deadly and can carry more loot! It also changes him to essential, so he cannot die. It is compatible with the puppies! perk however, if you decide to remove the essential tag from him.
GNR Fix- As some are aware, Threedog apparently loses track of your exploits at some point around level 20. This is a minor mod that fixes that.
GNR Enhanced- Bored with the same few songs over and over? This mod adds 100 new songs that fit perfectly into the game. You do not need to download the GNR fix if you have GNR Enhanced. Unfortunately not compatible with any other mod that makes changes to GNR (is compatible with other radio station mods but YMMV).
Mandalorian Armor and other Star Wars items- This is just a fun time mod, as it is basically not lore compatible and is simply fun to use. You can get a set of Mandalorian armor, plus a wookiee bowcaster, a blaster, etc., Though if you feel like Star Wars exists in the Fallout world then you can just figure it to be a cosplayer's dream and somehow someone made a star wars blaster that actually works. *shrugs*
There are other mods that I have downloaded but not tried, so this list may change in the future. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. c: I will be putting up a post for the New Vegas mods shortly!
