I don't usually post my Cosplay on here but I have been doing it for over 10 years under the name 'Cosmic Cosplay' on fb and insta. I used to belong to a costume group that regularly collected for charity at events, but I haven't done any since before covid.

Last weekend I attended my first local comic and game convention since before covid, debuting my new costume - Nick Valentine from fallout 4. So here's some pics.

I didn't win anything in the cosplay competition, but I did get a 'special mention' for my makeup (which took me over an hour to do), and was told by the judges that I was very close to getting in the finals.

Nick Valentine makeup 💘

I've been asked to show/explain how I did my makeup for my recent Nick Valentine cosplay, so heres a post about it.

I've only ever done this twice. The first attempt I did a while ago just to see if I could 'pull it off' with my face etc. Here's a pic from my first attempt, which was very rough!

So, my second attempt was for the convention.

I used Snazzaroo water based facepaint in black, and Grimas theatrical makeup in light and dark grey.

Yellow and black contact lenses went in first. (Which were a real pain! I hate using them as I have small odd shaped eyes (astigmatism))

I used a black ink eyeliner to mark out the general shapes on my face and neck first, where the 'holes' and metal bits were etc. I also attempted (but kinda failed) to try and cover my dark eyebrows using a glue stick, white face powder and white consealer.

When I mapped out vaguely where things were going, I first covered the main parts in the light grey facepaint, including my ears and behind my neck. I put a few layers on to make sure it was pretty 'caked' on.

Next came the dark grey shadowing around eyes, cheek hollows, and wrinkles/lines around eyebrows, side of nose, chin and mouth, making the contrast angular and masculine looking. Also adding Nick's 'scars' across his lip and forehead.

Finally adding the black 'holes' optical illusion around the sides and neck, and some silver to the metallic parts showing at the sides.

And TAH-DAH! Nick Valentine is ready! 💘

In future, to improve upon my technique - I am going to get some Mehron black, grey and metallic silver, as this apparently stays on better. (David Michael Bennett aka The Spine from Steam Powered Giraffe uses this type) I did find that during the day the black around my neck did rub off quite easily in my skin folds, and my weepy eyes from the contacts made me have to keep reapplying some under my eyes also!

How I made my Nick Valentine cosplay 💘

I've had a few people ask me about how I made my costume for my recent Nick Valentine cosplay debut, so here's a bit of detail about the process. I didn't take as many pics as I should have so most of it I will have to explain in text. (Sorry - long post ahead!)

I wanted to get this costume done for a local comic and gaming con, and I had about two weeks to do it.

The various parts of the costume I actually managed to source quickly, on amazon and ebay:- The coat, hat, shirt, tie, trousers. The shoes I got from Primark mens section.

They looked too brand new and needed to be 'aged/weathered'. I did this, by using a mix grey spray paint, and talc/baby powder on the fedora, tie and trousers, to give them an ashy look.

The white shirt was way too stark and clean, so I soaked it in a bucket of tea (yes, really) to give it a browny cream look.

The trenchcoat was the last clothing item I got and I didn't have time to age it, or add on any sewn patches, so that will be done for next time. For now, it was a 'new looking coat' for Nick. 😅

Nick's right robot hand was the most difficult thing to do, I had to do something quick that would work for this event, and I would always improve upon it later. So what I thought was, why not use a 'Skeleton' Halloween glove as a base for it, afterall. It does look quite skeletal from a distance. I painted the finger bones silver with a metallic acrylic paint pen, then I used EVA foam craft sheets to make the metal plate and joining plates. I covered it in 'mod podge' which is a type of glue/varnish like Pva glue (you can use Pva glue instead) to harden the foam. Then layered it with grey spray paint, clear spray gloss and some metallic silver acrylic. Then once I got the plates sized and shaped etc and painted, I glued them on to the glove with Gorillaglue.

In the end I decided to leave doing finger plates down the fingers themselves, as I needed movement, and that hand Plate part is very stiff.

I'm hoping to upgrade Nick's hand to a plastic moveable jointed one in future, with the help of a prop maker I know!
