When the 2013 fall season in Montauk ended for me with barely a striped bass blitz to be had, I merely wrote it off as nature doing its thing. When it again happened in 2014, I thought this might just be an anomaly. Let’s wait until next season before I start to worry. Well, its …
Edible False Albacore
Edible False Albacore
I got an email early this week from OTW reader Tim Adams who, after catching his first false albacore, did what supposedly cats won’t even do, and ate it.Sounds like something I might have to try…

Lemkes Canyon Trip-- 3rd Offshore Trip
September 20th, 2013
Shawn Dilkes and Ryan Schramm went on the IF with me for some mid September tuna fishing. Sometimes you just have to go. The full moon was the only negative. We left the dock at 4:30 and got out to Lemkes with a nice ride at around 6:30 looking to catch bluefin or yellowfin tuna. Rods went off many times but only false albacore were on the other end. I did manage to jig up a large ray that was a blast to fight. The weather offshore was perfect with tons of life around ie. numerous sea turtles. I think the fish ate plenty with the full moon and just were not interested. That is why they call it fishing and not catching.
Headed Home
Had a very raining July in PC with difficult conditions, but still grabbed some great bull reds. False albie fishing has been excellent this last month. I'm gonna miss those little rockets. Headed home tomorrow to chase tarpon. Really looking forward to getting back down south. I am attaching a link (below) to David Mangum's video he shot up here the last few weeks of albies on blood minnows. Very cool footage!
