Inshore Fishing vs Offshore Fishing in Cabo
If you’re not an experienced angler and trying to decide what type of fishing trip to book on your next vacation down in Cabo San Lucas Mexico, you may get a little confused with terms like inshore and offshore fishing. In this article, we’ll go over the differences to both educate you as well as help you make the best choice for you and your group when booking your next Cabo fishing charters.
Inshore Fishing
One of the more common definition and biggest difference between inshore and offshore fishing is the depth of the water – With 30 meters of water being the standard boundary. When you’re fishing inshore, you’ll generally be within a couple of miles of the shore, but depending on your target species, you might also just be a 100 yards off shore casting into the surf as it moves its’ way towards the beach.
Facts about Inshore Fishing
• Typically use smaller boats • Fishing is done within a couple of miles of the shoreline or in waters less than 30 meters deep. • Often have more consistent fishing – depending on the season and type of species your fishing for. • Fish caught are usually on the smaller size – but you are able to catch larger numbers of fish. • When inshore fishing off of Cabo San Lucas, you’re able to target: roosterfish, jack crevelle, yellow tail, grouper, amber jack, and sierra (spanish mackerel).
Offshore Fishing
Offshore fishing (also known as deep sea fishing), on the other hand is greater that 30 meters of water, and depending on the location you are fishing can require going 20 - 50+ miles offshore. The advantages that these big open waters have, is that they are able to produce large trophy game fish. If you are looking to experience the thrill of hunting big marlin, dorado (mahi mahi), sailfish, tuna or wahoo, this is the type of trip you want to request.
Facts about offshore fishing
• Requires larger fishing vessels • Fishing in water more that 30 meters and often 20+ miles offshore. • Requires heavier fishing gear. • Increased use of technology - radars, radio & weather equipment, sonar. • The changes of seasons, water temperature and weather, have a huge effect on fishing success.
Is one type of fishing better than the other? It all comes down to preference. In Cabo San Lucas, Big trophy game fish require the bigger offshore waters. Inshore fishing allows individuals choose to be near to land because they are fishing with kids, or the adults don’t quite have their sea legs yet. Inshore is also preferred when weather conditions offshore are not ideal for safety and comfort.
Best thing to do is consider who’s in your group, and what type of target species you want to go after - then talk to the charter fishing company about what they would recommend with regards to the possible areas to fish, and boat size. A good Cabo fishing charter outfit will be able to help create a successful outing for you and our group once they know more about what your looking for. Now stop dreaming and make that reservation!
A new filet knife would surely put a smile on that avid fisher person in your life.

Every offshore angler knows the feeling.
You’ve covered miles of water. The spread looks clean. The conditions seem right. But the rods stay quiet.
