false cathedrals is the sophomore release from kentucky based emo band elliott (on this particular record, chris higdon vocals, jay palumbo guitars, jonathan mobley bass, kevin ratterman drums). while falling solidly in the midwest emo category, elliott also inhabits the post rock space with soaring, radiohead-esque vocals, driven guitars, expertly placed basslines, and intricate drum work. dreamy, floating, melancholic, and powerful, false cathedrals is a vastly underrated emo classic that anyone can enjoy.

Elliott - "False Cathedrals"

This track starts out as a slight comedown from the opener, "Calm Americans", as sort of a chance to catch your breath after all of the energy and emotion that the first track on this album ejected.  It feels like a meditation, like a chance for self-reflection, particularly with the word "your" in the title, as if Chris Higdon is singing directly to you, to try to calm you down a little bit after scaring you so much just beforehand. 

But then, as the volume and intensity increases, there's a shift in the voice of the song itself as well.  Now it's "we" instead of "you", and you realize that the singer is putting his arm around your shoulder, that he's consoling you and regaling you at the same time.  And that's why I feel so utterly comforted by this album, like I'm sitting on the softest sofa with the truest friend.

Elliott - "Lie Close"

Ok, I hate to post a link to a song on Spotify, for reasons I've mentioned previously, but I had to put up this song, and it literally is nowhere else to be found.

I love Elliott, but really just this album, False Cathedrals.  I'd heard a little about it and them, from my brother, I think, and I came across it one day in CD Warehouse (when it still existed) for 5 or 6 bucks.  It is now one of my 5 or 10 favorite albums, and one of my desert island music choices.

I was rocking out to this in the car earlier, and realized that I needed to post some Elliott, to get the word out.  It's impossible to search for, even through music sites, because they keep returning stuff for Elliott Smith instead.  Who I also love, but it's not the same, and it drives me crazy.
