Okay, now that I've had a week to recover from finishing False Horizon, I can actually think about it again, lol. So if you're interested in kidnapping/captivity whump, here's the deal, spoiler-free:
This is from the novel concept I said I'd never write (oops).
It wound up being a novella (just under 50,000 words).
Main characters are Mark Elliott, a low-drama bodyguard, and his current protectee Charlie, a 15-year-old from a wealthy family.
(The POV is centered on Mark.)
They get ambushed and kidnapped. Both of them. Weird? Mark thinks so.
The first third of the story is their experience being held captive.
The next two-thirds is Mark recovering and dealing with cops and investigations while trying to figure out who was behind the kidnapping.
Writing style, generally speaking: my stories tend to be character-driven and grounded. The main characters are good, flawed, and human; those who oppose them have understandable reasons for what they do.
I trust my readers to read between the lines. I use a lot of implication, subtext, and revealing action rather than spelling things out. I'm not big on melodrama, but emotion can still be intense if it's justified.
