FAMACHA cards

Australia and NZ now can run FAMACHA courses as the Australia & NZ College of Veterinary Scientists' Small Ruminant Chapter have taken on the responsibility for the Quality Control for courses and annual reports.  Cards can only be purchased by people who have done the training - both theory and hands-on practical. Contact me if you want to hold a course.  I recently did one at Tocal College in New South Wales.

COLUMBUS, Miss. -- Goat and sheep producers in Mississippi are invited to attend a Small Ruminant Management and FAMACHA Training workshop later this month. FAMACHA is an acronym for the Faffa Malan Chart, a system goat and sheep producers use to treat stock against barber pole worm. The workshop, hosted by the Mississippi State University Extension Service, begins at 6 p.m. Aug. 15 at the Lowndes County Extension office on 485 Tom Rose Road in Columbus.

Arkansas Goat Courses

Small Ruminant Conference July 16 or 23, or August 6, 20, or 27, 2016 Various Arkansas Locations University of Arkansas Research & Extension is offering free, one-day conferences around the state. Brush up on small ruminant basics and learn about advanced aspects of caring for sheep and goats, including FAMACHA parasite-detection technique.

FAMACHA Worm Control Course

Management of Internal Parasites in Sheep & Goats Saturday, July 16th - 10:00 am to 3:30 pm. CCE Ontario, Canandaigua, NY Internal parasites are the number one health problem affecting sheep and goats. This workshop is designed to help producers develop IPM programs for their farms. The workshop will provide hands-on training in using the FAMACHA Anemia Guide, and health exams to determine the need for de-worming. Participants will receive a FAMACHA Guide® and IPM handouts. Microscopes will be available for the fecal worm egg identification and counting. Participants may bring a refrigerated sample from an animal. In the interest of biosecurity, PLEASE wear clean clothes and shoes to the workshop and plan on changing your clothes upon returning to your own farm before doing chores. You may also bring your own microscope. Cost: $25.00 per person, with each additional farm member $10.00. Pre-registration requested by July 12. Buck evaluation trial show larger variation in faecal egg counts and FAMACHA scores, indicating that it is possible to select for worm resistant goats.  Growth rates  & ultrasound eye muscles are also measured . Performance tests like these will allow for great genetic progress in meat goats.
