4am, after a late night practice (august 26th), off-camera

the first thing jaein does once they finish their practice is turn off her microphone and hand it over to a poor audio staff member who’s stuck staying up at this time of day because of the stupid rules that have been implemented. they exchanged sorry smiles for one another befor she ran away to the house ultraviolet was staying in. 

it was only the first night of this retreat, and she already wanted to run away. sike, she wanted to run away the moment she had to get on the van that brought her to this retreat. definitely didn’t help that the final broadcast for crowned was happening on her birthday. overall, this whole experience has done nothing but annoy jaein. 

she lets out a yawn in the bathroom, sliding down on the wall until she ends up on the floor. this is the only place without cameras thus the only place where she feels safe to complain. “i can’t believe our company signed us up for this,” she says along with a groan before looking up at her youngest member.

“wow, this place...” how could one person use so much space? “it’s, wow, it’s really beautiful here. though, it doesn’t feel very you, you know?” perhaps she was projecting her own moralistic views on duri because she considered them to be very similar people, but, “you seem like you’d like just enough space for the pups to run around, but not much more. and you’re such a good cook! maybe you and the chef can have a little competition.” she chuckled at her own joke, especially knowing the result would always fall on the professional, no matter how nice of a home cook duri was.

sung took another couple of steps, and at a turn, gasped. her eyes had locked onto the window, and carried her forward to it. “look at this view! gosh, it’s so beautiful. that’s the real selling point of this place. gosh, i could get lost looking at this forever.”

bbq party, off-camera

from what she’s heard, equinox didn’t have it as bad as the other groups. actually, it seems they’ve gotten the better end of the stick when it came to accomodation. nevertheless, it couldn’t compare to what duri ended up receiving as the mvp of the first round. though, she can’t tell if it’s really a prize worth having if it doesn’t count towards any of the rankings of performances. 

sneaking into the chair besides him, she took advantage of the short period in which mics and tapes were being checked. it was hard to find any time off camera during this retreat so she’s glad for this moment. she was getting pretty tired of having to think about what will eventually be aired whenever she spoke. 

“how’s the deluxe suite?” she says with a rather teasing voice. knowing duri, he probably wishes he could share it with his members, but it still sounded like a nice place to be. “have you tried the private chef’s food just yet?” she’s heard through the grapevine the amenities that duri got to have, but she couldn’t imagine him actually asking for food from the private chef.

@minjungfmd, august 26th at the bbq party, off camera.

he had done much of social butterfly runs through the bbq party, after making a dish using only a microwave. truth be told, duri just went with the cold dish option, putting his masterchef skills to the test, but nothing would seem to come out right in the microwave. though, he at least wished that he got to use his kitchen for a titan dish, without having the private chef, considering duri didn’t actually need the private chef - he could have just done it on his own. but, atlas, he managed to make it all work out in the end. 

duri decided to take a short time to himself, sitting against a tree, off camera, as he looks around the area. he felt, content, at least, and everything in between, that soft smile upon his lips. he had his notebook sitting in his lap, as he’s writing words down upon the paper - the general vibe of the area giving duri random inspiration to simply just write. so, with the sounds of the bbq party going on, he sat there and wrote. 

though, as time passed, his eyes looked up, and he saw someone else walking by, a familiar face. his smile grows a bit, before he’s greeting the other. “hi minjung!” he said, in his usual happy tone. “taking a bit of a break from the bbq too?” he asked, a small happy giggle leaving his lips afterwards.

she wasn’t being petty, yena tried to remind herself of that. the right to claim a practice room was something that calypso had earned due to their high rank and it was in her very right to make use of it. all practice rooms were filled, which meant that it was inevitable she had to shoo someone out. that it just so happened to be jihoon’s practice room that was... coincidence, of course. not pettiness, not spite, not some backhanded jab to get back at him.

of course, as soon as the production team had caught up on what yena was doing, they had been quick to sent a camera man after her but she decided to pay it no mind, the lens hovering over her shoulder as she gave a knock to the practice room door, opening it seconds after and stepping inside, announcing her presence. “hi there, sorry.” there was an apologetic tone to her voice, even if she wasn’t actually all that sorry. “the practice rooms, they’re all full at the moment...” she let her voice trail off, giving it a moment to see if he would catch the hint or she’d have to speak out that she was simply kicking him out.

despite the suffocation that came with crowned, minhee doesn't think he would have gotten the opportunity to lay in the middle of a grass field and absorb so much sun anytime soon. big cities, busy schedules, from one filming to another, he plans on relaxing as much as possible. despite having the option to kick out anyone he wanted from the practice rooms, he wasn’t in a hurry. maybe later today he would give it another go, but for now, it was all about relaxation.

until something covered the sunshine from his face. was it a cloud? minhee opens his eyes, squinting a bit as he finally focuses on what- no, who was hovering above him. “before you ask me anything, can you move-” he asks, almost huffs but there is a smile on his lips. “and yes, i am good, might fall asleep soon.” he adds, lacing his fingers behind his head and stretching. “honestly yena, you should give this a go, the most relaxing shit i’ve done all year.”

the house of whatever fucking gem the producers had written it off turns more into a hellhole than an escape out. a house filled with two other groups — he’d never thought he’d fall victim to asphyxiation, but two hours in the room lead to holding his breath one too many times before it becomes unbearable, silence a virtue, and he jets straight out the door. 

the air’s as humid as any korea summer, no trace of any beginnings of fall. yet, he manages to dissuade himself from the air conditioned rooms for any face familiar in the vicinity.

one knocks into grace from a higher power above when he spots minhee. his hands in his pockets, and the footsteps hastening as he makes his way towards the other idol. no cigarettes in tow this time, so he ventures for a small bite of rudimentary humor when he greets with a, “hey. anything jokes you got this time around?” really, it’s only a temporary solution to any of the bullshit surrounding him. but the metrics tell him this time: it’s the only source of a way out of the cameras.

so, he stares back at the ground, kicking the tuft of dirt with the toebox of his sneakers. “that house is suffocating, and i need a break.”

◤and i can't fight

it would be a lie if jihoon said he didn’t actively look for minjung first thing in the morning. he says morning, its way past 11am but jet lag was ruthless. having been in the states within the same few days of moving to these lovely house wasn’t ideal. however, he takes his time with it. messages her with the promises of a coffee and her prize from the bet she won this time. catalyst had somehow skyrocketed to third. unexpected to say the least really. 

it takes him no more than fifteen minutes to get the two coffees ready, feet quickly dragging him to where he told minjung to meet him, sleep still evident on his features, hair a mess compared to usual. he doesn’t care, he is tired and sure that the americano with two extra shots of espresso he made himself wouldn’t do him any good. however, the fresh air he makes sure to inhale a lot from is doing wonders to his mood. one good thing for today.

“sorry i’m late, almost fell asleep standing up.“ jihoon calls out when he is within earshot of minjung, still looking like he can fall asleep if he stopped for more than a second “i made you an iced americano, i feel like its too hot to drink anything else at this point in summer.“ he explains, lopsided smile pulling on his lips as he hands her the drink.
