The tradition of ark-like, rear-drive, long-wheelbase #Peugeot wagons dated all the way back to the 402 #Familiale of the thirties, but the 505 wagon as the last of that breed. There have been later wagons - 406/407/508 - but they aren’t quite as ark-like as the 505 and its predecessors, and the 505 was the last rear-drive Peugeot. This is mostly due to the ascendency of the minivans and SUVs (and later, “crossovers”) - conventional #wagons today are the sportier kind, rather than the pure utilitarian kind. - The #Peugeot505 was a big success, in production in global markets from 1979 to 1997, and because the 505 was, for a long time, the only product Peugeot offered in the U.S., it’s the only one you see here frequently - it is by far the most popular Peugeot ever sold in the states. - The 505 wagon arrived three years after the sedan, in 1982. With its long wheelbase and huge interior, could rival much larger vehicles - think Chevy Caprice - in terms of utility and comfort. It drove like the sedate, refined French big car that it was - sharper handling than U.S. wagons by far, but meant for similar utilitarian purposes. The live axle rear (sedans had IRS) was intended for payload capacity, not handling. - Peugeot’s high water mark in the U.S. came in 1984 with just over 20,000 cars sold, and the #wagon was a big part of that - it replaced the aging 504 wagon (still sold alongside the newer 505 sedans) as an ’84 model. - All pricey European imports were hit by the Plaza Accord currency fluctuations after 1985, which drove up the 505’s price as it began to age and Americans began to lose interest in Peugeot’s diesels. To offse this, Peugeot offered more variants of the 505, including an 8P version and a Turbo wagon, but sales didn’t improve. - Those who did try the 505 were rewarded with a solid machine, though It’s true that Peugeot’s thin U.S. network could make service hard, and that the electronics could be a weak spot. The 505 sedan was dropped after 1990, leaving only the wagon (and the newer 405) for Peugeot’s final year here - 1991. Just before the planned launch of the 505’s replacement, the 605, Peugeot said au revoire to the U.S. market that August. https://www.instagram.com/p/Bp4xgPNg3s6/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=v1k8d4r5hym1
