For my Famous Finale, I decided to share the last movement of Beethoven’s 5th symphony. The 5th is iconic for its use of the “fate” motif which undergoes thematic transformation as the work develops, ending with this triumphant orchestral explosion! Hello, readers, and welcome to our final week of the season! To celebrate, we’ll be sharing Famous Finales all week long, and I’m up first! I hope you’ll forgive me for going very nostaglic here... I spent the afternoon yesterday celebrating the end of the year with my Opera Workshop teens, and we found ourselves watching old videos, including some from the very first year of our workshop, when they learned the second act of Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro, including this epic finale. This piece is close to my heart, and always such a revelation for young singers, especially. Though I know this piece inside and out, it never fails to show me something new every time.

There’s been a lot of opera in “Famous Finales” week here at Musica in Extenso, and I’m going to continue adding to the pile. This beautiful final trio & duet at the end of Richard Strauss’ Der Rosenkavalier is one of my favorite operatic pieces and such a sumptuous way to end this story of love and the heartbreak of letting someone go. The fact that Octavian is a pants role is what makes this work so gloriously well, with these three soaring voices filling the air with joyful agony.  I’m pretty picky about my trio here, and this is one of my favorites, Anna Tomowa-Sintow, Agnes Baltsa, and Janet Perry from the 1984 Salzburg Festival.

we arrived to our last week from this season! We celebrate this season finale event with Famous Finales, here at Musica in Extenso!

Today we will listen the finale of a famous and rare opera, Eugene Onegin from the romantic composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. I chose this opera, because I consider it’s a very representative opera and it’s kind of a musical rarity in these times.

Dear Followers,

we arrived to the finale moment of the current season, here at Musica in Extenso! Our special “Say Goodbye” Week, entitled as Famous Finales presented a great collection of “oldies but goldies”, opera and also symphony finales from the universal history of music. 

As the Editor-in-Chief of Musica in Extenso, I consider, that the 2016-2017 season was a successful one, for our blog. We reached a big number of followers, in present we have 2100+ followers and also we changed our adress to a new and official one (musicainextenso.com). For the next season we have new plans and we will introduce new themed-weeks. We will return with a rich list of Guest-Editors and talented young composers in our most-followed series, Composer Portraits.

Our Director of Artistic Planning, Melinda Beasi ( @cantationem ) will continue the prosperous Female Composers series with the 9th Edition; our Artistic Planning Assistant, Nicholas Olinger ( @mikrokosmos ) and our kind Artistic Assistants, Antal Zsuzsanna and Juan Manuel Orozco ( @juannitto ) are already proposed new ideas and intentions.

I want to say a big THANK YOU to my talented colleagues for their contribution and patience, and last but not least to our kind Followers!
