#JewelledJuly Day 26- Sapphire Panthère brooch, Cartier, 1949- white diamonds, yellow diamond and sapphire, set in platinum. An iconic jewel in Cartier's repitoire, this piece was created for Wallis Simpson, Duchess of Windsor. Based off the design of an existing Cartier piece created for her collection in 1948, this brooch is striking in the simple portrayal of it's unusual subject matter. Comprising of a diamond and sapphire panther gracefully crouched upon a stunning 152.35 carat Kashmir sapphire, this magnificent cat appears to be regally surveying the whole world as his kingdom from atop his royal perch. A great favourite of the Duchess, it was an integral part of her jewel collection and was one of the stars of her Big Cats suite, seven jewels created by Cartier in the form of panthers, tigers and leopards. Worn throughout her marriage and exile with the Duke of Windsor, this brooch never failed to cause a stir where ever it went, and soon Panthère designs were in high demand by every society lady. It was not long before jewel- loving socialites Daisy Fellows, Barbara Woolworth Hutton and Princess Nina Aga Khan had their own suites of stunning Big Cat jewels, but none could compete the Duchess's original pieces, which were designed with her avid involvement. The panther symbol soon became synonymous with the Duchess's bold, exoticly- oriented style of dress, and these pieces were amongst the most famous and coveted jewels within her entire collection. This brooch, along with the rest of the Big Cats suite, was sold in Auction after the Duchess's death in 1987. @cartier #jewelledjuly #cartier #pantherebrooch #wallissimpson #duchessofwindsor #famousgems #famousjewelry #sapphire #diamond #yellowdiamond
