Can’t Afford to Fall - p103
This lovely bind was bound for redtulipsbindery for our 1-to-1 trade. The goal was to bind a Drarry fic with “old timey letter/communication” vibes. Me being me, immediately thought typewriter (hence the delicious typewriter keys” - and from there is spiraled into vintage junk journaling.
There are little nods to the fic hidden amongst all the layers here - most notably the “De-Extinguisher“ Harry gifts Draco.
This is THE single most amount of layers I have ever had in play at once. The just jacket was SO much fun to play around with.
I wanted to pair it with an aestheticly classics cover so I used this mahogany Allure bookcloth from @hollanders.book.and.paper.arts - it doesn’t take HTV nicely so I opted for a naked cover.
The speckled edges were an experiment - and while not perfect, they match the books colors so lovely.
I’m pleased with how this bind turned out! 🖤 I think it’s safe to say, from the number of videos I was sent upon its arrival, that it was well received.

So. It’s finally done. My hand bound copy of Bite Down Into Me by @everydarkcorner. Such a fun read, I'd recommend it to anyone and everyone who likes bloody, sexy fics.
I'm pretty chuffed with it overall. The paper I used to cover the book was a bit too thick so you could see where it kind of cracked as I folded it. Overall, though, I'm very happy with how it turned out.
I was genuinely having so much fun reading this second volume of Debt of Time, I quit fixing the punctuation (it's so nice to have a piece of writing that has been so heavily edited and beta'd and proofed, there've been like three tiiiiiiiinnnnnyyyy little things that I've tweaked) to just read. It's really annoying that the apostrophes and quotation marks didn't come over. It's also annoying that I have to fix the possessives of the names ending in -s--Sirius, James, Charlus. Sirius', James', Charlus'.
I fucking loved Maevy, but Tilly is just--omg a fucking riot, and the family is also so........... perfect. They're amazing. It was hard to put down.
PS, I put the front end paper in the first volume of Manacled, so I'll have pictures of that tomorrow. My method really is just slapping the cover into the end paper. I messed up by cutting off the margins. The printer didn't print edge to edge, which is mildly annoying and my cat won't stop licking the exposed bare backs of my legs and wow that skin is so sensitive, her tongue hurts.

The cover is made of ecru canvas (homemade book cloth), printed on a gel plate with black acrylic. The title and image are made with stencils.
I wanted to evoke the idea of an old, rustic, well-used and worn -out document.

I love this story, and am happy to have it in my collection. That said, I can tell you that this binding was very eventful.
I think I will change my name to Not Perfct bindery. The two volumes of this book took me a long time, because I was buried in workload. It seems that every day I picked up this binding project, I made some mistake. The worst one was sewing the signatures too tightly so it was impossible to round the spine. Another mistake I made while cutting the fabric, as can be seen, the covers were in different proportions. This is my 60th binding; and I must learn that in excess of confidence lies the danger.

To rebind or not to rebind?
What do you think about rebinding your early ficbinds?
Looking at mine, I see so many mistakes that it makes me want to redo them, but on the other hand, they are a testament to my progress, a constant reminder of what I've learn.
It's not that I'm now an ace at binding, but I have improved. My first binding were lot more crooked, smudged with glue and there is definitely room for better endpaper finishing ... but I'm fond of them.
