Have you ever considered Dreamwidth to secure your fannish family’s future?
O.K., so it looks like Tumblr’s imploding as a fannish platform, as so many others have in the past. (Pour one out for platforms gone!)
Apparently a lot of fannish types are moving over to Dreamwidth, which I really hope continues. Not to knock Tumblr’s set-up, but it’s never worked as well for me. I still miss LiveJournal (which worked beautifully for a decade... before its corporate types lost their minds and drove everyone off.)
Dreamwidth is a LJ clone that is fan run (i.e., no advertisers or CEOs to demand mass horribly mis-targeted purgings of, well, anything really). For those who weren’t on LiveJournal: It’s primarily text-based (but can certainly link/host pictures), and more community- and conversation-based (as opposed to the more “shouting out the window at the world” feeling I get from Tumblr [and FB and Twitter]).
I’ve not really picked up with DW (even though I migrated My LJ to it years ago), partly because it seemed like fandom fractured a lot at that point and ended up everywhere... eventually coalescing largely on Tumblr.
If a lot of fandom moved over to Dreamwidth, I’d love to be able to fully jump back in and settle down the way I did on LJ, because I prefer the format (there’s a reason LJ used to rule the fannish world!), and there’s much less chance of everybody having to pack up and move *again* in a few years when the next commercial platform decides to ban X, purge Y, or sell out to Z.
So, think about it, won’t you? :-)
