OK FIRST OF ALL THAT 18+ GROUP IS AMAZING! I JUST REBLOGED IT AND I’M GOING TO CROSS ALL MY FINGERS (toes included) FOR ME TO BE CHOSEN TO GET IN CAUSE IT’S SO DIFFICULT TO FIND PEOPLE MY AGE AND I CRY ok hahaha now hm… tips! like I’d say that the things helped me the most are: (some are not just digital art but also traditional art)
- If after a few tries you see you can’t do it leave it for a while and try it next day or a couple of days later because artists usually try too hard and sometimes it’s just not a good moment
-The sketches don’t have to be cute and ordenate. When I first saw fanart I saw all the artists did neat sketches which where cute and ordenate and I got frustrated when I tried cause I used to do a lot of lines. So I finally let myself go and then I started to had a lot of fun sketching.
- To make lineart do as many lines as you need. Erase and do them again but if you can, try to do fast lines (if that makes sense). Like if the head is a round shape do the circle complete all the times you need to make it how you like it but don’t do it in parts, just do it all at once. The same with all the body
- Always separate the color, the lines and the background in different layers, also if you have more than 1 character try to separate them in different layers too because then you’ll be able to move each one separately
-Try as many styles as you want, you are drawing to have fun not to like the others
- AN IMPORTANT THING I WISH SOMEONE HAS TOLD ME BEFORE: I usually draw on photoshop (but I think SAI has this option too) ok so the option MULTIPLY is heaven! If you scan a traditional drawing and you want to paint it using the pencil lines instead of doing lineart digitally then use the multiply option, this option lets you paint fillin the blank spaces without removing the line
-Make a small selection of brushes. Try them all and choose the ones you like the most
-Try to use a reduced palette of colors
-Don’t be ashamed for using references
-Look other art or fanart, take notes of what you like from each of them BUT DON’T STEAL OR COPY (I’m sure you won’t but some people do it) the feeling when you see someone has copied your style is the worst cause sometimes get a style takes years and it’s like if someone has stolen your baby
-And practice a lot. I’ve spent hours and hours watching tutorials on youtube or reading tutorial posts.
