We love a good statistical analysis (this one isn't that good, but it's honest) of fandom, so let's see about the very specific opinions on different tropes.
I got curious the other day about how fics for various fandoms add up in terms of trans hcs/representation, so I started to make this spreadsheet with some basic averages/percentages from different fanbases on ao3.
The first sheet is filled with the top 15 most written for fandoms on ao3. For a few of the fanbases, like marvel, I condensed subtypes of that fandom into their higher ranking umbrella term (i.e., both marvel and marvel’s avengers was on the top list, and since avengers is tagged with marvel most of the time, I only did the averages for Marvel). In cases where there are multiple formats for the type of media, I referenced the “related works” tag for the numbers which I got (i.e., Sherlock, while the show is written for more often than the Arthur Conan Doyle novels, I used the “related works” as a catch all for that fandom).
The second sheet is based on fandoms that myself and a few of my friends commonly look up on ao3. I included this in part for a more personalized examination of this topic, but also to take into account what 4 people of various non-cis identities typically look up. This does not take into account whether fandoms may have canonically trans characters. I hope you enjoy! Any comments and questions are welcome.
I think it'll be really interesting to watch the ao3 traffic over the next few weeks.
They get a big enough jump over the winter holidays to put a strain on their servers. Just their weekend traffic alone has gotta skyrocket for March and April this year.
Recently I was thinking about how much SladeRobin (particularly SladeJay) has taken off in the last couple years. Before 2016 I hadn’t even heard of anyone shipping Slade with anyone but Dick. I got curious about the actual numbers, and since AO3 only lets you view your own stats, I did my own data scrape.
This is what I found:
Findings:
78.3% of SladeRobin shipping is SladeDick. This makes sense considering Dick is the oldest + he hand Slade have the most canon interaction. (+Teen Titans Slade had his all-out obsession with Dick)
The fandom does not ship Slade with the female Robins.
As of today (Aug 5, 2019) there are 907 total SladeRobin fics.
In 2017, SladeRobin content increased by 223.4%
In 2018, it increased another 220% more than doubling that number. It appears it’s still on the rise as well.
Perhaps most interestingly, there were pretty much no SladeJay content before 2017 (6 fics) and since then there has been 147 fics written resulting in a 2940% total increase in content. That’s incredibly impressive for a previously almost nonexistent rare pair. Especially because there wasn’t really any SladeJay canon content around that time (at least I’m pretty sure?) so this looks like it was completely internally triggered by fandom content creators.
Methodology:
My sample was only fics in AO3 that has a relationship been tagged with one of the above ships (Example: Dick Grayson/Slade Wilson NOT Dick Grayson & Slade Wilson).
I then pulled the data by year. For most of the Robins, (with the exception of Dick) there wasn’t much data before 2014 so I rolled up any other data from years before this.
Note-
2019 is not done + we haven’t hit SladeRobin week yet so those numbers will probably change greatly before the end of the year.
The label 2014-20xx probably could have been more clear. It’s supposed to mean anything 2014 and older, but all I could think of was --2014 and I don’t think that’s widely used syntax.
I did not do cross comparisons for flipped tags (Ex: Slade Wilson/Dick Grayson) because I think AO3 knows to pull in both. If not, there could be some more data.
I did not check for under additional tags (Ex: sladin etc) so there may be other fics that have not been properly tagged.

Other comments:
If I ever go further in this, it would be interesting to map these counts to content creators and see who the main driving forces are (I have a hypothesis, but it’d be fun to have it in data)
It’d also be interesting to map out the relationship (or lack thereof) between the fictional universes and canon events. It’d be interesting to measure some of the influence of Teen Titans, the Renegade arc, and Arkham Knight etc on what is produced in fic content.
It’d also be interesting to run this analysis on other pairings. AO3 has a wealth of data that is not currently measurable for the average user, and I’d love to dig into it a bit more since this was pretty fun and I have experience with web crawling/Big Data.
A clear example on why not to believe any bronly’s “we’re the silent majority” BS.
Above we have the reblog graph of this post claiming Destiel shippers don’t like Sam and won’t like Sam bonding with Cas (I know, ridiculous).
The big red arrow points to the original post, the big green arrow to my reblog of a friendly “actually everyone I know loves Sam and can’t wait for this”, though it later descended into idiocy because well, as you can see, they didn’t much like the fact that their post had a dozen odd notes before I reblogged it and now has nearly 800. As you can see, this is where it became of note.
From this you can clearly see that the original post had a few notes, then exploded when I reblogged it and other Destiel shippers and Sam fans came to rebuff the claim. Later on we have a reblog from them (small red circle) with the arrow showing a single line of a few bronlies adding to it (and the same people repeatedly so it’s even less than it looks) saying we are all so stupid and fake, until I reblogged it again. The other offshoots (green arrows) are all Destiel positive reblogs too.
If anyone ever dares tell you bronlies are the majority or even a slightly significant number in this fandom remember this, this is one of their own posts and it clearly shows they are vastly outnumbered. This doesn’t even really show many non Destiel shippers from reading the reblogs and we know there’s loads of non Destiel TFW loving SPN fans out there too, so the % is even lower fandom wide rather than just in comparison to Destiel shippers.
Anyway. Food for thought. They’re negative, spread unfounded lies about others (like who we like as characters I mean come on, those are basic lies Susan) and at the end of the day are really very insignificant in number. We all knew it already but I like this pretty clear representation on one of their own posts.
This fandom is inclusive, loving and kind. They do not represent a significant number of us at all.
After the pie chart I made I was very curious about the popularity of Daryl ships on AO3. So here’s ship “popularity” according to the number of fics submitted per year. It’s interesting that at one point Daryl/Glenn was the most popular ship :P
