Inkblot theory

Since s4, and especially this weekend with the surreal reports from the con, the whole show seems to me to have devolved into a sort of rorschach like inkblot. No ships were explicitly confirmed or scuttled; "mary" is simultaneously an evil villain and a poor misguided whatever; redbeard is simultaneously a dog and a boy; etc etc etc. Various people can look at the show, and like looking at an inkblot, see completely different shapes. I personally find that show unwatchable. I don't find it satisfying or coherent. The mishmash of "dramatic moments" and "character interactions" may make for good fic prompts, and head-scratchers for meta writers, both of which i will take over the show any day of the week at this point. I'm still here for the fandom, because the fic and the meta DO make sense, but I'm increasingly letting go of attachment to the tv show itself. I know what shapes i saw in s1-2, and to some extent in s3, but s4... just... it's too distorted, not inviting to look at. So if i throw my virtual hands up and tag something "inkblot theory", that's what I'm getting at.

True story: Most of what I know about Smallville is from CLex fanfic. I’ll read something in a fic, then go and check to see what the cannon version was.

So, competency kink: reading lots of SGA fic, and can’t help but notice that the fics I enjoy the most are the ones where John is a competent commander, with his marines respecting him and believing in him, and Rodney is the same with the science team. I thought more fics would be like that, but a lot of fics cast John as maybe being a bit of a joke with the marines... The best ones are where John has a strong desire to be competent, yet appear like he’s totally slacking off.
