Fandom Problem 5237
It's great seeing more and more people acknowledge how racist this all is. In my very unpopular opinion, there's an important addition to make: You can't ignore the sexism that is very much present. An issue I see with a lot of fans is they assume that everyone in Japan that makes manga and anime are perverts and creeps appealing to creepy men by definition, due to the work they produce. Whether it's actually "horny" or exaggerated based on racism and/or stereotypes and lies. And then they turn around and defend the same things they often claim to hate in western media, viewing it as appealing to women. Notice anything here?
Japanese manga, anime and overall media is seen as lesser, perverted garbage made for equally gross, creepy men; non-Japanese media is seen as greater, pure and perfect media meant for equally pure women. It's frustrating seeing "men's interests" written off as gross in a way that stereotypes them as a bunch of creeps for as much as existing (bullying is never justified) and the fact they're not allowed to hate said stereotypes. Fandoms are meant for all and all this does is mistreat innocent people.
In addition, it also stereotypes women as being the "fairer" group who never experiences any kind of sexual attraction, because "sex bad!" and it forces women to be this group of pure and entirely innocent beings, lest they face harassment by other women for daring to be different and/or daring to like the same thing as "icky" men. It's also a harm onto (Japanese) women authors: it's the year 2024. If you honestly believe no woman alive produces any "adult" content, that all of them coincidentally follow the same level of "pure" as the ones you already know, and that the ones who do produce "adult" content deserve to be bullied or erased or written off as "gross" men,
Go. Out. Side.
Racism and sexism are both at the heart of this issue; both need to be tackled in order for this issue to be solved.
