“I saw what you were doing back there?” Erica said as she threw her keys on the table next to the door.
“We already talked about this, Erica,” Olivia replied, letting out a sigh and taking off her coat. The two of them had been drinking for most of the night, but when Erica witnessed Olivia being a little too friendly with the bartender, her mood quickly shifted and all she wanted to do in the end was go home.
“No, we haven’t, Olivia. And that’s exactly it. After your last case, when you drink all you do is… smile and be ‘friendly’ as you call it.” She paused, paced the room and then turned to her lady. “Olivia, please. Don’t shut yourself out like this. I want you to tell me why you’re doing this.”
“Doing what? Coming to New York to see you? While everyone back there thinks I’m visiting ‘a friend’? Is ‘because I love you’ the answer you want to hear?” Olivia’s eyes had begun to get teary. Her voice had been raised slightly as she spoke, and her eyebrows furrowed in frustration.
Erica’s arms had dropped to her side as she accepted defeat. She was tired of dealing with Olivia while she was drunk. She was tired of feeling helpless and completely useless when Liv was in one of her moods. Erica did want to reach into that foggy mind of hers and pull all the pain and misery out of her. Make her feel like what they had was special and not something she used to escape her problems. Erica wanted them to be happy, but Olivia wasn’t allowing them to have that.
“I’m sorry,” Olivia began, her body only clothed by the pants she had been wearing that day and a black braw that made her breasts look as perfect as ever. “I—I didn’t mean… I don’t know. I just… need to clear my head. I’m going to shower.”
As Olivia exited the room, Erica’s eyes followed her every move, watching her perfectly poised back as she walked away. “Whatever,” she said under her breath as she walked into her—their—room.
Olivia had come out of the bathroom wearing her bathroom and for a second—she had completely forgotten about their fight—Erica wished to see what was underneath. But she quickly remembered they had been fighting and said nothing. She didn’t even make eye contact.
“I’ve been thinking,” Olivia began. She sounded more sober than before, as if she had had the biggest epiphany of her life. Erica resisted the urge to look as Olivia spoke. “I don’t know if we should keep doing this anymore.” Erica didn’t care if the two of them were fighting or not. This was enough to cause her to look up and pay full attention to her lover. As she heard the words, her heart skipped a few beats and at the same time, managed to sink into her stomach. A knot had formed in the middle of her throat, preventing her from speaking. All she managed to do was open her mouth and whisper, “What?”
“This. You and me. The way I make you feel. The way I keep lying. The way we are towards each other.”
“You make me happy.”
“Do I, Erica? I feel like all I ever do is put you in a state of misery that you seem to get out of whenever I’m not around. You deserve better than me. Someone that can love you more than they love their job. You deserve someone who will dedicate their whole life to you.” As the last word escape her lips, her voice cracked just a bit, making a single tear form at the corner of her eye. When she realized she could potentially break down and cry, she turned around and faced the closet while Erica stood up and tried to force her to look back.
“Olivia, look at me,” she said through tears falling from her eyes. “Olivia!” She said louder than before. “You do all those things for me! You’re that and more. You make me happy! You’re the only positive thing in my life right now after… after everything!” Erica felt as though every person she ever loved walked out on her, and this was exactly what was happening again.
“I’m sorry Erica, but you deserve better. You need to be happy. And with me, that’s something that will go nowhere. I love you, and I always will, but I think this is the end.”
“Olivia… Please. I love you.”
“Me too. Always.”
“We can fix this,” she said through more tears. It was becoming harder and harder to breath as she spoke through sobs.
“Not this time,” Olivia finally said, turning around and revealing her face. Tears were falling down her cheeks as her olive eyes turned to meet Erica’s bright blue orbs. The two of them stared at each other for what seemed to be minutes, but in reality it was seconds before Olivia broke away to hide her sobs from the only person she truly ever loved.
“Please, baby, put down the gun.”
“I’ll do it after you, sweetie.”
The three of them had been pointing their guns at each other for what seemed to be hours, but in reality, it had been merely minutes. This new girl—this new Olivia—had shattered her world into a million pieces. Erica didn’t know right from wrong—left from right. Everything was one big mess. A big web that she couldn’t seem to get out of, and it was starting to become too much for her. She felt as though she couldn’t breathe. There was a huge knot in her throat that was preventing her from speaking.
“Erica. It’s me. It’s Olivia.” How was she supposed to believe that when they both looked the same? Except for the hair. The hair was different. Olivia had been sporting this red hair for about two or three weeks now, but she said she hated yet, and seeing as though Erica hadn’t seen her for the past few days, it was possible that she had changed it.
“Just—be quiet. Both of you!” Erica never yelled at Olivia. Never. She was under so much stress at the moment that the thought of yelling at her lover did not seem to bother her.
As soon as those words left her mouth, they both became quiet, but none of them put their guns down. “You, Red. When’s our anniversary?” Erica asked through teary eyes, her gun switching from one Olivia to the other.
“March 21st,” Red Olivia said, shaking her head and forcing out a smile. Too easy, Erica thought, wiping a tear away with her sleeve.
“Where did we meet?” She asked no one in particular.
“It was a Saturday,” Blonde Olivia said, her face expressionless and solemn as she answered the question. “It was raining outside and you were called over to Boston to investigate a homicide. You were called because it was your field… Aliens and such.” A smile was displayed on her lips as she finished the ever so nostalgic memory. Meanwhile on the other side, Red Olivia dropped her gaze to the ground with a smile on her face. “You... What are you smiling at?” Erica asked with hostility. “She forgot something.”
“And what’s that?” Erica asked, more tears pouring down her face. She refused to believe that there was anything else missing. That was exactly it. How else would anyone know? Especially this…evil clone.
“When we first met, it was at the bar after the case was over.”
Go on, Erica said in her head, knowing where the woman was going.
“You sat on the other end of the counter and you were looking at me with a smile on your face. And I’ll never forget this. You took a sip of your Scotch—which I found strange in a woman, drinking such a hard drink—and then you licked your lips while looking straight at me.” Red Olivia smiled, and another tear ran down her face.
“And you smiled,” Erica continued.
“And I looked down, at my drink with a smile on my face. For about ten minutes we didn't take our eyes off of each other. Later, I moved to your side and we began to talk,” said Blonde Olivia. Making it hard, once more, for Erica to identify who was who.
Without thinking about it once more, Erica looked at Red Olivia, and pointed her gun at Blonde Olivia—she pulled the trigger and a bullet landed right between Blonde Olivia’s eyes. She fell to the ground with a thud as her body became quiet.
Erica saw the real Olivia collapse to the ground with a gasp, happy to be alive. “You didn’t have to kill her,” Olivia said as Erica wrapped her arms around her.
“We didn’t need her alive.” Erica turned her back to the bleeding body, taking Olivia’s face in both of her hands and looking straight into her eyes. Her eyes were both red and puffy due to all the crying. Her whole body shook with fright and happiness.
“How did you know who to shoot?” That was a question that Erica had been asking herself ever since her finger touched the trigger. “Because,” Erica started, “I know you. I know that look in your eye. So hurt. So insecure. So unsure. I love you, and I will always know the real you.” Erica knew that this wasn’t what Olivia wanted to hear, but it was all Erica could say.
“I love you, too.”
Erica’s hands pulled Olivia’s face towards her own, their lips interlocking as their faces gently collided against one another. The two of them didn’t move for quite some time, letting their lips savor each other’s taste—the taste that they both thought they would ever experience again. “Never stay away from me,” Erica said, pulling away to speak only to resume the kissing after the words escaped her lips. “Never.” She said, pulling away, then wrapping her arms over Erica’s shoulders. “Never,” she said through their pressed lips.
