HTTYD, overrated character?
Ooh, a good one!
So overrated character … I’m going to check fanfiction.net since that seems to be a good measure for fandom. With that said, I’m going to go for “most overrated character interpretation” because in general the interpretation strikes a nerve more than characterization.
So the most overrated character incarnation … I’d have to say any version of “do no wrong” Hiccup that ignores our main character’s flaws. Some writers can do AU versions of Hiccup quite well, like yourself, but plenty of fans forget that movie!Hiccup is a sassy teenager with somewhat selfish motives, amidst his virtues of having brains, an open mind to explore different perspectives, and the ability to innovate. He’s willing to sacrifice his village’s food supply at the beginning of the film to prove that he can shoot down a dragon.
With that said, Hiccup’s virtues win out over his flaws; ignoring said flaws, however, makes him overrated in the fanfics that portray him as a victim of circumstances rather than a free agent. Yes, he gets bullied by his peers, and I don’t believe in bullying, but his dad has every right to yell at him for not following orders and staying inside during a dangerous dragon raid.
