Thanks to several folks who alerted me recently that the AO3 Bookmark Viewer was down. It's back up and working now! :) (You still have to click the "Click to see bookmarks" link)

The AO3 tag stats tool on the fandomstats.org site, on the other hand, is at least temporarily disabled. Let me know if you miss it -- it would be good to know how much folks were using it. But at least the site no longer simply returns an error.

This is all thanks to the @annathecrow and @esgibter debugging the server issue, and Crow migrating and fixing the site very quickly. (I don't think either of them are active here on Tumblr much anymore, but I want to give credit where it's due!!)

PSA, the site is functional again (thanks @salsae for reporting - I got your ask but Tumblr refuses to let me answer). It was yet again a change of markup on AO3.

For anyone who might be using the API: the “warning” filter was renamed to “archive_warning” to match AO3′s markup.

How about some details on the Haikyuu fandom? :)

Hey!  :)  I don’t have time for a deep dive now, but can I recommend fandomstats.org, where you can get a quick sense of the AO3 fandom? (Use the official AO3 tag: Haikyuu!!)

For instance, a few things that jump out at me – Haikyuu has few crossovers.  

For comparison: 1.3% of Sherlock works are also tagged Harry Potter; 1.5% of Naruto works are also tagged Harry Potter; 1% of Game of Thrones works are also tagged Harry Potter… I guess what I’m saying is, I’m a little surprised to see that only 0.2% of Haikyuu works are also tagged Harry Potter, and only 0.6% with the most common crossover, Kuroko no Basuke.  But it’s not completely crazy, either; there are plenty of relatively self-contained universes in fandom, like Star Trek and Star Wars.  (And, for that matter, only 0.7% of  Supernatural works are also tagged Sherlock, which is its most common crossover.)

This fandom is dominated by M/M, but not by any single relationship:

It is also very fluffy! :)

Hope that helps a bit.  Feel free to dig in deeper on fandomstats.org and try combinations like “Haikyuu!!, Alternate Universe” – which can reveal some of the most popular AUs in the Freeform Tags section (Soulmates, College/University, Fantasy, Coffee Shops, Canon Divergence):

You could analyze the fandom of Transformers

Hey anon!  I think you’ve made this request a few times now, and I’m sorry I missed it until now.  I don’t have a lot of time to take requests right now, but can I recommend fandomstats.org? It does analyses of AO3 tags for you!  For instance, if we type in “Transformers - All Media Types”, there are a bunch of breakdowns.  To highlight just a few that I found interesting --

The freeform (additional) tags are fascinating:

I know “Sticky Sexual Interfacing” is one of three (?) types of sex Transformers have in fanfic, but I don’t know how it works – or why it’s the most popular!

Also, the fandom seems to have one pairing that far outstrips others in popularity (Jazz/Prowl):

However, the most popular characters are not Jazz and Prowl, but Optimus and Megatron:

Somebody sent an anonymous ask a while back asking about my old ASOIAF/Game of Thrones fandom stats post, and whether I could update it now that both canon and fandom ships have changed a bunch.  Tumblr just ate my reply. :(

I’m in the middle of some other projects and don’t have time for a deep dive into that fandom right now, but we can get a quick look by using fandomstats.org.  I’ve included just the shipping info above, but on the site you can see other data as well.

Things have changed a lot since back in May 2014, especially in terms of Jon/Sansa:

The nonny also asked where Jon/Sansa came from as a ship, which I’m afraid I can’t help with – I know the canon well, but have not been immersed in the fanworks and haven’t witnessed the evolution of this ship, or its dynamics (Edit: and even though they’re interacting a bunch on the show now, that’s more recent than the emergence of the ship).  If any fans more active in the fandom have theories, please chip in!  

If we look at the Jon/Sansa tag, we get the following top accompanying tags, which are interesting (warning: book/S6 show spoilers discussed below the cut):

The modern setting AU is very common in the fandom overall (18% overall; 22% for this ship), so its popularity isn’t that surprising.  But from the popularity of the “R plus L equals J” and the “Cousin Incest” tags, it looks like lots of folks have been shipping them as cousins rather than sibs – even since back when that was just a fan theory.  Not that that explains the why, necessarily.

Hee!  Somebody bookmarked one of my works with the note, “Pretty good author.”  As someone who made a lot of embarrassing public bookmarks notes before figuring out that authors could see them, I always get a kick out of seeing the occasional lukewarm/faint praise reviews of my work. :)

Along with that, though, I found these lovely notes, which made my day and would totally be book blurbs if my fics were published:

She's a real person, she has real career-woman doubts (turned up to 9000), she loves her husband, she loves her husband's 'husband', she'd love it if they could all just live happily ever after, but you've got to read through to the end to find that out....
