soulmate/arranged marriage/serial killer AU.
Fate wasn’t perfect nor did it ever try to be. Whatever happened happened and there was nothing that one could even do about it. Once something was decided, it was set in stone until that person drew their last breath. Some would say that it possibly carried into the afterlife if there was even one that existed.
The name was written as clear as day on Viktor’s forearm in delicate cursive that was so beautiful yet so tainted. Two names written perfectly and engraved in Viktor’s flesh for the rest of his lifetime. He had admired it so much when he was younger and through the years that he grew and matured. Saying it was sweet against his tongue and felt almost like a drug whenever it had to chance to lay rest between his lips.
Yuuri Katsuki sounded so tender with a hint of softness that lulled the mind into a sense of security. It was a name that one could trust and hoped that the person who held the name was worthy of trusting too. And he was right because Yuuri was the most beautiful and trust-worthy person he had ever met.
They had met in a place so simple, the grocery store it had been. Yuuri had been filling a small plastic bag with apples while checking them for any imperfections. Viktor had been aiming to grab a watermelon because those were always delicious and refreshing to have in the summer. And it was like fate had brought them together in that exact moment as Yuuri turned to leave that section and ended up bumping into Viktor instead.
The bag of apples tumbled to the floor due to Yuuri’s surprise and Viktor was quick enough to hold onto the watermelon in his hands. It was a scene of embarrassed frenzy as they both sank to the ground to collect the fallen apples while a blush rested upon both their cheeks.
It was from that moment that it clicked and a spark appeared to kindle a flame that began its steady burn. Laughs were had and numbers were exchanged and the next time Viktor knew, they were friends falling into the roles of lovers. It was fantastic and bright but also warming and subtle in its own ways. Gentle kisses in the early morning light and loud dance parties which went on for hours and hours. Wide grins and fleeting touches and tight embraces, it was like love had exploded onto every single inch of his life.
But then fate was a funny thing.
It lived to bring joy into people’s lives before taking it away at the drop of a hat. It was a quiet Monday morning when Viktor finally brought up the question and noticed the tension that lined Yuuri’s shoulders.
“Why...haven’t you shown me your soulmate mark?” Viktor asked, both of them in the kitchen as they prepped dinner. Yuuri said he was going to cook katsudon today which was a family recipe and his favourite dish. All the fun had been sucked out of the room with those words and Yuuri didn’t say anything as he continued to chop at an onion.
Chop.
Chop.
The only noise that filled the small space aside from the steady boiling of water. Viktor blinked before he tried once more, his heart trembling a bit within his chest. Anxiety was rising almost at a high speed and Viktor didn’t know why it had gotten to him this much.
“Yuuri?” he called out and it was then that Yuuri stopped chopping but didn’t turn around. Still no words were said but Yuuri took in a shuddering breath before turning to look at Viktor with eyes that were apologetic.
It was then that he knew.
“...I’m not your soulmate...am I?” Viktor asked though it was more of a statement. His whole heart seemed like it was about to crack into millions of pieces when Yuuri didn’t say anything. “Then why are you here? With me?”
Yuuri turned around fully before leaning against the kitchen counter, his head tilted low. “This man and I were actually engaged,” Yuuri started and it was hard for him to speak about this, Viktor felt it. “And it was arranged actually, not my choice or my family’s but my father owned this man a lot of money. Money he needed to pay for my mother’s medical bills so,” Yuuri halted in his words and rolled up the hem of his shirt to show a burn mark against his right hip. Where his soulmate’s name was supposed to be. “The man burned my soulmate mark away and arranged to marry me and he was cruel and terrible and his whole family was-” His breath got caught in his throat and Viktor felt himself wanted to reach out so he could bring Yuuri into his arms and hold him close while telling him that it was okay.
He felt anger clutch at his chest, pure rage because how could someone even think about being cruel to someone so wonderful? Someone who lit up the room with his smile and had the biggest heart he had ever known.
But before he could speak, Yuuri continued on.
“So one night, I did something really bad,” Yuuri murmured. “Really, really bad.” He was shaking, his fingers curling into the long sleeves of his sweater which had rolled down.
Viktor was about to ask what but then Yuuri looked at him with a face that was expressionless.
“I killed them, Viktor. I had to.”
