I feel like this is one of the top five most egregious crimes committed by JD and TPTB. Not only was it completely sloppy as fuck to give some hand-me-down plot line to another character, they gave it to a character with minimal emotional connection to the fandom.
If they'd managed to give us a character we'd seen develop, instead of pasting one in bc of....contracts? or some shit?...we may have been on board with that shifting of the story arc. But trying to force some sort of emotional connection between characters when the majority of the fandom can't even connect to this character is lazy as fuck. Lydia got it wrong. That's my truth here. She's still, even now, figuring out her power, and she misunderstood. She got it wrong.
This, though. Ultimately we can’t completely blame the show for the Jackson arc being dropped (Colton chose, for whatever reasons, to leave), but if that’s the case then you just set that arc aside and move on or find a natural way to rework it. The problem is that Jeff has no patience whatsoever for character building... and maybe that’s partly due to actors leaving and needing to start over so often, but it’s also just... sloppiness and laziness.
I love the idea of Lydia getting it wrong. I don’t even know how we decided she was right to begin with, honestly. I forget how the whole arc went but from what I remember it was just her looking at a photo and deciding their eyes looked similar (even though the actors’ eyes aren’t similar at all) and then suddenly everyone was accepting her as a Hale.
And the idea of that being a mistake, I think, and her not being related, canonically works for everything except one moment. In season four she was able to open that ridiculous Hale vault (which apparently only Hales’ claws could open). And as much as I’d like to just forget that stupid vault exists altogether, if we’re trying to say that she could canonically not be Peter’s daughter then we’d need to work around that. So can we think of a way around this? Alternate explanations for opening the vault?
