Fried Green Tomatoes, 1991 dir. Jon Avnet
i know this is the toxic yaoi website, but ya'll need to read "Fried Green Tomatoes" and enjoy some wholesome lesbian representation. two lesbians in the south in the 1930s onward, raising a kid and owning a business and murdering a klan member?
the movie is fucking FANTASTIC too, but the book is waaaay gayer.
Fried green tomatoes is the best book and film ever in my mind.
It's so awesome and the relationship between Ruth and idgie is so sweet. They are so in love.
I love them it's a very sweet and lovely read, the writing style is witty and it feels like a breath of fresh air hits you in the face with each page. I love the way that Fanny Flagg writes it's so lively and you can feel the love seep in through the pages. I love this book so much I would give it more than five stars.
So yeah I am still not finished but it's such a lovely story that I felt the need to share it with you guys over here
Reading my second Fanny Flagg book
The All-Girl Filling Station’s Last Reunion, Fannie Flagg
When I was in the American Bookstore in Den Haag, I looked for the book with the most feminist cover. And The All-Girl Filling Station’s Last Reunion by Fannie Flagg did not disappoint!
“So far, there had been only one serious mishap at the station. And of course, a man was involved.”
I was really excited to read this book in which the story of a modern day middle aged woman, and the story of a young woman in the 1940s are intertwined. I especially liked the 40s plotline, as it focuses on women taking over the men’s jobs, and the struggles that come with this. The history of the WASP’s (Women Airforce Service Pilots) is continuously overlooked, and it is nice to be able to imagine this a little better through this book. Next to showing off the awesomeness of strong women, this book is also generally a lot of fun to read, and shares many wisdoms of women looking back at their lives.
“She had learned that that being successful person is not necessarily defined by what you achieved, but by what you have overcome.”

Autistic Idgie Threadgoode. Sensory seeking. Can’t stand scratchy feminine clothing. She watches Buddy to figure out social interaction. She doesn’t realize when she’s said something inappropriate.
Idgie and Ruth - friendship between two woman.
Not that we were anything like as graceful or pretty as the girls in "Fried Green Tomatoes", (and you don't have to be lesbian to enjoy a good friendship with another woman), but like them we did go through all the upheavals of life together. We were very lucky to have each other.
We have known each other since we were six years old - went to school together - got into terrible scrapes together - fought like cats at times.
She was the sister I never had.
Some friendships get lost when you move away, get married, have kids - but this one endured and lasted (if even sometimes through sheer stubbornness). I would be nothing like the person I am now, without her.
She taught me that some friends are worth hanging on to, even though they are an unmitigated pain in the ass sometimes.
