He was simply in the middle of talking about his previous missions with Cindy when he felt plush lips press against his cheek, words halted midway as he slowly turned his gaze to the blonde with burning ears. It wasn’t often that the sniper was caught off-guard like so, that was typically his job. Still, it wasn’t as if he was going to complain about it. 

“Hey now, who said ya had ta give just one?”

The rogue was surprised at the hold on him, a squawk tumbled past until he felt the press of the other’s lip onto his forehead. He himself gave his affections to friends freely, but not often are they reciprocated the same way, save for a few. Jackson stared at Molly for a moment, the gesture finally settling and his mind caught up to the moment as he smiled. 

“Hey now, I don’t look that sad, do I?” 

He would be lying if he said he wasn’t feeling the pressure from the Advisors and Inquisitor relying on him for this particular trade route to go well. The kiss from his friend was much appreciated for calming him down.

Bright blues squinted at the empty space before them, his expression clearly unamused at the other’s antics. It was a little disappointing to see that the mission they were sent off to do what essentially a wild goose chase in The Hinterlands, where bears were a-plenty and became their chasing partners. 

“—Ya know what, Molly?” Crass as it was, there were no words for Jackson to express giving the other the finger.

The rogue stared at the warrior, waiting a moment to see if what she said was in jest or dead serious. It seemed to be the latter if anything and he set down the arrow heads he had been sharpening. “N-no... Yasha, that’s not how tha’ sayin’ goes. There’s two more foolin’ before gettin’ ta the killin’.” 

Jackson was awfully glad to be on the same side as her, otherwise he’d be good as dead even with Njal at his side protecting him.

The prince’s reserved demeanor reminded him of his older sister, so Jackson could see the little tells the younger had when it came to expressing himself. Since he had started to attend the same school as Noctis back then after the things he’d done, he took it upon himself to look out for him as best he can. 

The hug was unexpected, but not unwelcome. He chuckled and simply smiled as he wrapped his arms around his friend. Jackson hoped that he could tell that it meant a lot for him to say that. “Course, kid. Always will be.”

“Well shit, how’d ya figure that out?” He chuckled, worry still in his eyes as he found a place for the two of them to sit. Jackson slung his rifle back, securing it first before he helped the other sit. The man knelt beside him and took out a med kit from one of his pouches to get started on treating the bleeding wound. 

“Here’s some water too while you’re at it. Don’ want ya passin’ out on the way back.” The Marshal briefly informed him what to expect when helping the prince and his entourage with the tombs, but he definitely wished that he was also told of the state of the places as well. 

He felt a little under-qualified if anything. The remaining Crown-loyal Glaives would’ve been faster as helping compared to a single Crownsguard. 

—Jackson also just felt guilty for not preventing that fall in the first place.

A melodious laugh spilled past his lips as he raised his water skin with the other. His direwolf, Njal, huffed as he lounged behind Jackson, belly up to have a few rubs as his rider drank. “Can we really call what we did ‘bad decisions’?” At first meeting, the rogue seems to be a paragon of the perfect, upstanding civilian; to those that know him better, it’s true to a certain extent. 

“Regardless, those are things I can definitely raise a toast ta.”

He almost turned to look around, nerves shot in momentary panic at the other’s words. The Shadow did his best to shove down the anxiousness from within but used a bit of that for his next words. 

“Creators, wasn’t sure if ya were goin’ ta show soon. Scared me straight there.” 

Jackson certainly hoped that whatever deity is present isn’t messing with him. He’s had more than enough on his plate.
