Page 11. --- Premier Aberhart Says Agriculture Being Sabotaged ---- EDMONTON, Jan. 13. - Premier Aberhart, in a statement yesterday commended the action of the Alberta Farmers' Union in circulating a petition among its 15,000 members demanding immediate federal action to "rectify the desperate conditions under which farmers are being forced to carry on."
TO GRANT WISHES The premier said most of the demands of the union came within federal jurisdiction but that "to the extent that any of them are within the sphere of provincial autonomy, I can assure our farmers that we shall be ready to carry out their wishes."
(Officials of the union recently announced a letter had been sent to the Dominion minister of agriculture demanding a moratorium on all secured debts for the duration and two years after; security on tenure, a raise in the ceiling prices for farm products above the cost of production and a floor price to provide "at least cost of production.")
ESSENTIAL INDUSTRY The premier said that agriculture is an essential war industry and "it is absurd nonsense to talk about any post-war reconstruction while agriculture continues to be sabotaged."
He termed security of land tenure a most important point which is bound up with a reform of the monetary system, and added:
"The three objectives essential to placing agriculture on a sound footing - adequate parity prices, and equitable adjustment of debts and security of land tenure - would wreck the plans of the financial powers for 'the new order' which they are preparing for us."
