In the late 19th century, and following the flotation of their brewing business on the London Stock Exchange, the Guinness family became enormously wealthy, allowing them to build, or enlarge, private residences for themselves around the outskirts of Dublin. Dublin’s O’Connell Street, and Farmleigh House.
O’Connell Statue: Maid of Erin, trampling broken fetters and holding the 1829 Roman Catholic Relief Act, points to her Liberator. The wingèd victories: courage (strangling a serpent, bullet hole in her breast), eloquence, fidelity (with the wolfhound), and patriotism are represented.
Farmleigh House:- Library roof; portraits in the Nobel Room (celebrating four Irish Nobel Laureates for Literature: Yeats, Shaw, Becket, Heaney - and Joyce, because Joyce), Ballroom, and Courtyard.
Farmleigh House:- Dining Room; Benjamin Iveagh Library, with 1280 copy of Topographia Hibernica (Gerald of Wales), first edition of Ulysses and Gulliver’s Travels, Painting of Prince of Wales joining Order of St. Patrick, St. Patrick’s Cathedral, by Michael Angelo Hayes.
