Witch Cult Interview

Mysterious, angry, fast, slow. All words that defines south coast powerviolence outfit Witch Cult. In their short existence things have moved at a ridiculous pace. Just An Insight spoke to their vocalist about how quickly the Cult has grown.

How did the band form? Our drummer was in a different band before this one that he left for a number of reasons; he messaged me as he knew I was into fast stuff and asked if I’d be interested in starting something. We’re all really good friends and into fast music so the rest of the line up was pretty much a no brainer. There was Internet hype about you guys before you even played a single show. Do you think this has helped the band get shows or was this something unexpected? The hype on the Internet is pretty funny. Initially we tried to have this mysterious vibe going and hype it, but after a while we half gave up on it, which is when the hype really started to kick off. I think the hype has helped us get one show so far maybe, the rest have been friends doing us favours by putting us on. You play a ridiculously short set. Do you sometimes worry people will miss your set because of how short it is? No more than I’d worry if we played a long set, people would get bored and walk off. Where did the name Witch Cult come from? I suggested we had a proper doom name. So we sat around a kitchen table for about an hour coming up with the most stereotypical doom names you can think of (stone funeral, electric acid etc) and then someone said Witch Cult, and with Witch Cult Today being an Electric Wizard record it kind of doubled up as a Wizard tribute and a doom as hell name. You have already played a heap load of shows and having a record released by Holy Roar records. Are you surprised how fast things are moving?

It is all moving very quickly and the Holy Roar thing is insane. I am completely surprised how quickly it’s taken off. I think it does go to show that music is a lot about who you know, which is a shame sometimes I think, but it’s only through hard work in other bands that we know all the people we do, so I guess it kind of balances out

With members of Witch Cult being in other bands as well is it hard to nail down set gigs around the other bands schedules? So far it hasn’t been a major issue, and it means we’ve ended up on the bill with their other bands a few times, which for me is great, because the other bands rule. What is the main inspiration behind Witch Cult? Wanting to play fast music. We all are huge powerviolence fans and we just want to play in a fast band. On a more personal note, I like having the band as an outlet, so anything negative in my life/the world is an inspiration for me. If you asked our drummer this question I’m sure he’d just say “Spazz”. Tell us one thing about Witch Cult that not many people will know? Certain members listen to Phil Collins and George Michael as much as any powerviolence band. What is next for Witch Cult? We want to put out a bunch of splits too. There’s quite a few bands we’d like to do weekenders with also. So more shows, more songs and more recordings is the plan.
