I was involved in an argument on facebook yesterday about the body+ movement. This person had shared this article posted by the Huffington Post and said that they are all for confidence but you shouldn’t be glorifying an unhealthy lifestyle and had admitted that a little insecurity can motivate people to better themselves. I tried to say that a person’s body and what they choose to do with it are their choices, private between themselves and their doctor, and it isn’t your place to tell them what is healthy and what isn’t. That perhaps this article isn’t glorifying an “unhealthy lifestyle” but in finding happiness and confidence in a place that is typically judgmental and cruel. Harnessing insecurity as a means of motivating people to better themselves is not compassionate and understanding, but emotional abuse.
I have reached a point where I get so tired trying to defend acceptance. I will continue to not be judgmental towards anybody based on their appearances and other people can keep on sneering and making jokes and being cruel.
I have struggled with my weight my entire life and had been mocked by my peers and family because of it. It has always been difficult for me to share my body with other people, although I had so desperately tried to (I have multiple posts about it on this blog from over the years) and it wasn’t until a little over a year ago that I was actually able to be naked around another human.
Nobody should be made to feel unlovable because of their appearance or be mocked and made fun of because their mass is different than yours. Nobody should ever be denied a basic level of human decency because they don’t fit into a specific standard of beauty. A person should be judged only by the quality of life they create for those around them. I hate knowing that I had to be 25 to start appreciating myself and to allow others to appreciate me. I hate knowing that other people have gone through and are going through that same thing.
You are not defined by a number. Not your weight. Not your bust, waist, hips. Not your age.
You are more than that, you are better than that, because you have kindness, empathy, understanding. You have a warmth inside of you that nurtures compassion, that can make somebody’s day with your laugh, your smile. You can teach. You can learn. You can do.
You’re not alone. I won’t ever let you feel that way.
