This could just be them both being stuck in my brain but Jupe reminds me a bit of Fat Leonard.
When Fat Leonard was 21 he was the getaway driver for a bank robbery in Penang. He was arrested and charged with possession of weapons, a capital offence, and heard other prisoners being tortured. Then one morning, he smells incense wafting in from a temple and thought it was a sign from God. Two weeks later he was taken for sentencing and found his mother had flown from England to beg the judge for clemency and he was given a fine rather than executed.
In his mind, God performs a miracle, and like many people who have cheated death, Leonard, from this moment on, would fear nothing.
It's not just that you can swap Jupe's name in there, it's also how Leonard talks about his past trauma, almost laughing it off or boasting about it. I think Steven Yeun and Jordan Peele expressed something very real about how some people who've "cheated death" think and act.
