'Fatal Racing'
[DOS] [FRANCE] [MAGAZINE] [1995]
"That’s it—I’ve figured it out! The problem with Fatal Racing is that it falls between two stools. The developers set out to give the game a simulation-style feel, yet they included tracks that are, for the most part, completely unrealistic. The result is an incoherent package. Just imagine a Ford Escort driving through a loop-the-loop—something just feels off. The other issue is the one I mentioned right at the beginning of this article: the simultaneous release of Fatal Racing and Screamer has done the former terrible damage. The latter is far more fun and much better executed; it doesn't suffer from the same identity crisis, and it offers pure, unadulterated thrills. Another point that doesn't work in Gremlin's title's favor is the soundtrack. The sound effects are intrusive and repetitive, while the music is a bit too "lightweight" to provide the kind of frenetic pace the game needs. It is certain that, had Screamer never existed, Fatal Racing would have fared much better… As I’ve said before, some games just have no luck—though, that doesn't change the fact that, from a design standpoint, it remains a bit of a disappointment." ~Jérôme "Lord KK Noir" Damaudet, Joystick (December 1995, #66) [BMT🤖]
