Day 33
I just finished watching Fatbeard and I saw some ppl argue/justify Kyle encouraging Cartman to go to Somalia as like a "he just wants to get rid of him so it's fine and actual it's moral because he is doing it for the good of the town" thing.
Which I think is just an insanely funny thing to argue in my opinion, cuz like. The episode explicitly tells you that Kyle really wants this to happen so Cartman will die.
Like Kyle really has no effect on whether Cartman will or won't do something as we have been shown. If Cartman wants to do something and Kyle disagrees that will only bring him more joy. And if he agrees he's still gonna do it if he truly wants to. So whether Kyle remained silent or said anything didn't really make a difference. So having Kyle encourage him is used specifically as a way to showcase Kyle's personality, motivation and character.
The only argument you could possibly make by that point in the episode is that Kyle just wanted to get Cartman out of South Park.
But in his very next scene he is shown excited and giddily making sure that Cartman going off to Somalia is true. He would even like to take credit for it. Stan litteraly asks "You really think he'll die in Somalia?" To which he responds with "Oh for sure!", like what more confirmation do you need?
Kyle isn't responsible for Cartman going to Somalia. But that's not the point. The point is that Kyle wanted/had no moral issue over encouraging Cartman to go die and was excited at the prospect of it.
And this isn't like a "kyle is actualy a horrible person and I don't like him post". I frickin love Kyle. I'm just kinda over seeing people baby him. He has a little bit of psychotic in him, let him be, it makes him a fun character and you don't need to have a moral justification for everything he does.
MerMay 2023 Day 8: Pirate
My mind went to the Fatbeard episode.
Anyway I wanna ramble about FatBeard for a second bc I’ve seen it brought up as justification for the takes that:
•Kyle is a bad person too
•Kyle starts stuff with cartman on his own bc he enjoys their rivalry
I don’t know, I agree that Kyle was definitely in the wrong here but by this episode, Cartman had WELL proven how dangerous he could be and how much he could specifically endanger Kyle and people close to him, and his INTENT too. While this isn’t justification for Kyle’s actions, to say it was just something Kyle did out of cruelty and his own inner evilness is kind of?? Idk??? I don’t think fair?? It feels more like being preemptively defensive if anything. Throughout the episode we see how desperate Kyle is to get rid of this person who he believes has made his and other people’s lives worse, and will continue to do so, and Kyle believes that for VERY GOOD REASONS. He’s seen how dangerous and competent cartman is, and how cruel he can be, and has experienced it first hand. Of course he would jump on the chance to get cartman to go off somewhere where he’d probably get himself killed, was it right? No. But i don’t think it was evil.
The only defence of Kyle being blatantly shitty in this episode is like- he was ready to sacrifice other people. He put no effort into keeping people like Clyde and Butters from following along, and that was definitely where he showed a lot of callousness.
On the next point, I don’t think this is at all evidence Kyle likes their rivalry and wants to keep it going??? I can’t even fathom how people would think that. Kyle makes it very clear that he wants Cartman GONE and for good. He wants this finished, he wants out from this relationship and is doing so in the only way he knows how since as he’s seen, he can’t get rid of cartman peacefully. Kyle is fully satisfied with the events of cartman’s disappearance up until his brother disappears as well. Only then do we see Kyle regret his actions and make efforts to undo them, it’s not him somehow missing cartman or wanting to rub in his victory or anything like that, he just wants to get his brother back. We don’t even really get a glimpse of Kyle being proud of winning in this episode without cartman around- that was never Kyle’s intent!! He doesn’t care about winning the game, he cares about finally having peace and getting rid of this bad, dangerous person who he hates and has caused him harm.
Pirates don't cry, Clyde. Pull yourself together. You're gonna earn another smack from Ike. I mostly just wanted to draw his cute pirate outfit. OwO I'm a sucker for that style of clothing! If there are any alternate outfits you want to see, just let me know! Or let me know who I should draw! Or send me dumb arts or messages! Or whatever!! I'm not picky!!
Fatbeard for the ep ask game!!! >:3
Fatbeard!!!!!!!
Do I like this episode? Why or why not? Yes!!! I love Fatbeard! I remember when it first aired, I was living in my best friend (at the time)'s mom's dealer's basement with said best friend, sleeping on a recliner in what was basically our 'living room' cause he claimed the one bedroom. And during the whole eight months we lived there, I was constantly so tired and stressed because I couldn't find a job, but oh my gosh, when we first watched Fatbeard, I KILLED myself laughing and it was an instant mood-lifter for the whole twentyish minutes it was on the TV. Literally I associate a big chunk of this episode with me just like sitting on a concrete basement floor laughing my face off.
Favorite moment? Ohhhh man. I love when Kyle tells Cartman that yes, he definitely should go to Somalia, with like zero hesitation. He's just like, "Yeah, dude, absolutely!" so casually. ALSO! When you see everyone who decided to join up with Cartman and CLYDE IS IN HIS PIRATE OUTFIT, trust me when I say I YELLED when I first watched it. Oh my God and Kevin being the one to basically save the day?!?! With his lightsaber?!?! Gold.
Least favorite moment? This is one of those episodes where I don't actually think I HAVE a least favorite moment. Maybe sad crying Clyde because I feel so bad for him. Or Ike slapping him, cause...rude.
Do I have an unpopular opinion about this episode? What is it? Do I? I never know if any of my opinions are popular or unpopular. Clyde's pirate outfit was better than Cartman's. Actually, so was Kevin's.
Something I would change? Nothing. I would have loved if Clyde got to do more, but that's me being a weirdo Clyde fangirl.
Rating out of 5? 5 starrrrrrrrs.
Anything else I want to say about this episode? It made me realize that I need more pirate Clyde in my life. Good thing I have my little plush version of him! Also, 'Somalian Pirates We' gets stuck in my head ALL the time. (Not complaining.)
