Bazett Fraga McRemitz and Kotomine Kirei

I haven't finished my analysis on their dynamic yet, but I still wanted to post this. I'll post a short version of it under the cut on how I interpret the dynamic.

I find their dynamic interesting as the first abusive dynamic of TM where the victim does care about their abuser. It's really uncomfortable for being realistic grooming and abuse, so I understand people hating it or not wanting to engage. However, the story is not victim blaming Bazett - quite the opposite.

Bazett was someone depressed since birth who found solace in someone similar to her who felt depressed and purposeless. The dynamic was problematic from the start because of the codependence and age gap, but they did care for each other.

It makes Kirei retroactively more interesting because it proves that there's no way he didn't love Claudia, and this makes him a fascinating villain; he chose to double down on being evil when he felt the urge to kill Claudia because he couldn't accept that he had both good and evil in him. You love him for doubling down and hate him for not trying to overcome his problems. The abuse humanizes him; it shows that he did connect with people in a twisted way because abusers choosing to hurt someone proves they cared.

Bazett didn't want to fix him; she wanted validation from someone evil to accept her when she was depressed and felt worthless. That means that she's not a perfect victim, but no one in real life outside of Angra Mainyu is. That's why she needed Angra, the ultimate victim, to teach her that people will suffer in life no matter what. The one thing Bazett did misunderstand about him and Cu isn't that they're too cool for society. Angra taught her that everyone needs each other and that they don't have to be codependent on each other. Kirei and Cu hated that they had urges to harm who they loved, and lose who they loved in life, respectively.

I love that the story ends with Bazett waking up and choosing to live for herself, while honoring Angra and Kirei's advice. In other TM works, Bazett still cares for Kirei but does not want to be with him anymore in Fate/Unlimited Codes and FGO. I'm proud of her for standing up for herself while being human enough to say she'll always care for someone she bonded with.

I hope I can finish the analysis on them soon. The remaster's translation has lines that I like more for my interpretation, and other lines I like less.

She's the best girl in Fate easily, and possibly the best girl of all time for me, either her or Ayane Ichijo from Full Metal Daemon Muramasa.

She's such a special and unique character. Someone as driven as Iori and with the idealism of Shirou. Someone who was so afraid of life that she built a tough exterior because she couldn't accept that everyone in life suffers, which is why she needed Angra to teach her that. Someone who kept fighting for her justice and the people she cared about no matter what, until Angra taught her to take care of herself first. Someone who taught me that loving the person who hurt you isn't pathetic, it's human, and you have the strength to still care for them and walk away.
