Both sides of the "Iori is like Kirei" debate are wrong.
I'm in the middle of a long analysis about Kirei's character, mainly his dynamics with Claudia and Bazett, and now I realize that both sides of the "Is Iori like Kirei?" debate aren't correct.
Iori is the trope of wanting to be special - like Matou Shinji, but taken seriously, not as a hatesink. He wants to be better than everyone else. His story is about that and what being special really means - it means devaluing others' and your life by cutting them short.
It's about him slowly realizing he can't have his cake and eat it too by being both a good person and the coolest person.
It's about the inherent unfairness that he has to do that just to get a chance of being the strongest while omnipotent MCs like Aoko, Ryougi and Tohno don't and get to be good people who don't have to do that. What would you think of a poor person who steals?
Kirei is also someone who was unlucky like him. That's the theme they share in common.
However, Kirei's character is about both the coolness and the patheticness of someone who is born with evil urges, and doubles down on them when he's clearly being an unreliable narrator. You both love him for having faith in his evil and hate him for not trying better to overcome them.
He says that he never loved Claudia. However, given the romantically-charged interactions with Bazett in HA, there's no way that he hadn't loved his wife of two years.
He was coping because he didn't want to believe that loving someone and wanting to hurt them can coexist, like people who struggle to reconcile that abusers do it because they care in the first place. It's the duality of him choosing to be a monster and his vulnerability at being unable to accept being flawed himself.
Kirei says that good men can do bad and bad men can do good, but ironically, he never applied that to himself. He doubled down on being evil and thought he had no choice.
He's somebody who went so far to try and summon Angra Mainyu because of his need for validation, like Bazett, except he never lived long enough to stop being codependent like she did.
So, I have to say: both sides of this debate are wrong. The side of "Iori is Kirei because they're both evul!" and the other one of "Iori is a sweet boy. He's not born evil like Kirei", and admittedly, I had the latter interpretation too until now.
The one thing they have in common is that they're both unlucky. It's not fair that Iori isn't the strongest like other MCs are. It's not fair that Kirei was born with urges that make him want to destroy what he cares about.
Iori fans should not hate or mock Kirei for the unfairness of being unlucky. "Sweet Iori can't be evil like him." I was like that too until this analysis. Iori's story is about being unlucky, so we shouldn't hate Kirei for his unluckiness too.
Iori only chooses to be a monster in ETD. Kirei chose to be a monster after Claudia's death, and even then, he still had humanizing moments with Bazett, Rin, and Shirou, even if he ended up smashing them to bits.
And as all bad boy characters, they also have in common that they are suffering. Iori is suffering because he feels that he can't live unless he's the strongest. Kirei is suffering because he can't accept that he's someone with both good and evil in him and wants to be either fully one or the other.
I'm about as old as Bazett and I finally understand this intricacy of FSN. Fbates was right - it really is masterfully written, even if it's not my favorite piece of literature.
It's just a shame that so much of Nasu's clever writing is subtext and unreliable narrators, which means that it's hard for many people, even me, to realize what's going on sometimes. That's why rn I prefer HH where the writing is in your face, because it feels more "fun" and the fandom can understand what's going on.
Okay genuinely though why are giltoria shippers so dedicated to the WORST ship dynamic when femdom Salter and Puppyboy Gil are RIGHT THERE in Carnival Phantasm???? I'm not even a giltoria shipper but if i need to hammer some sense into you poor taste heathens i will. Salter pegs that man!!
