Scissors, wrapping paper, and tape occupied the couch, leaving you and your inexperienced helper sitting on the rug beside it. But not completely alone, various sized boxes surrounded you both and made a mess of your previously spotless living room floor. Different colored ribbons and bows decorated the coffee table as well. The only furniture not in use was the television stand.
"Time to teach you my second favorite part about Christmas," you beamed.
A quizzical look crossed the man's face as he eyed everything displayed in front of him. He had to admit the paper was a beautiful color, and the ribbon matched perfectly, along with the bows, but he wasn't sure what purpose they served. Christmas was a new concept to him, which you had eagerly decided to teach him.
"And that is?" His gaze turned towards you, curious eyes meeting your twinkling ones.
"Wrapping the gifts!" Clapping your hands a few times out of excitement, you pulled one of the many boxes towards you. "Can you hand me that roll and a pair of scissors, please?"
Thanking him for the items, you got straight to work. First, you cut the exact amount of wrapping paper you needed to wrap the box. Then, you reached for the tape, cutting it into small pieces so you could use them to secure the wrapping paper in place.
"Would you like to help me?"
You could feel his eyes on you the whole time, examining your every move. Even though you'd been doing this for years now, his attentive stare made you feel nervous. It also filled your cheeks with some heat.
"I don't understand what you are doing. Why are you covering the box with the paper?" There was a small frown on his face.
"Because it's supposed to be a surprise. You don't want the person receiving the gift to know what you got them right away. Part of the fun is them tearing away the paper. Sometimes you even mess with them and put the gift in a bigger box. Other times you wrap it in a way that makes it look like something completely different." Your shoulders pulled into a shrug as you explained it to him, a smile on your lips.
He nodded, humming softly in acknowledgment. "I believe I understand the purpose now."
"So, do you want to help then?"
Once again, he nodded.
You happily scooted closer to him, placing the box in front of the two of you before taking one of his hands.
"Okay, first things first, you have to be careful because the paper is thin and delicate. We don't want it ripping." Guiding the hand you took, you brought it over to the left side of the box and helped him neatly fold the paper.
Too busy cutting tapping it up, you didn't notice the way Diarmuid stared at your touching hands. Or the way he hesitated to pull away once you both finished wrapping the gift, bow and all.
"See, what's that fun?"
Diarmuid looked down at his hands before returning your smile. "Yes, it was."
