ㅤㅤㅤ"I  can  be  impressed  with  you  now,  as  well  as  later!"  Lucanis  laughs,  his  boots  landing  firm  on  the  clay  tiled  roof  overlooking  the  Grande  Markets.  He's  not  out  of  breath  (not  yet),  but  the  Crow  cannot  spare  a  moment's  pause  if  he  intends  to  keep  up  with  Miri  as  she  vaults  over  the  gap  between  this  building  and  the  next,  sailing  across  the  alleyway  as  if  she  were  the  one  with  wings  and  not  he.  “What  is  it,  bella,  are  you  so  allergic  to  a  compliment??”

𝑺𝑯𝑬 𝑰𝑺 𝑶𝑽𝑬𝑹𝑾𝑯𝑬𝑳𝑴𝑬𝑫 𝑩𝒀 𝑻𝑯𝑬 𝑨𝑹𝑹𝑨𝒀 𝑶𝑵 𝑯𝑬𝑹 𝑫𝑬𝑺𝑲. Ruby keeps her office relatively spartan, excepting for the few shelves of books and maps on the wall, which makes it all the more shocking for Mirima to present her with, not one, but multiple pots of wildflowers. "This is too generous," she says, because it would be impolite to say nothing.

What did one say when presented with flowers? Just a year ago, Ruby would be able to flutter her lashes and say something coquettish, but that was to people who wanted to woo her. She doubts the Inquisitor's sister of all people wanted something like that. Unless ...? Ruby snuck a glance to Mirima's face, trying to divine some hint as to the woman's motivation and intentions, but felt quite sure there was nothing too forward to be found.

Best just to show a grateful deference, Ruby thinks, and offers an appreciative bow of her head. "I thank you, Ma'am, of course. They're lovely flowers. What species are they, if I might ask?"

❝ Babae... ❞  Hissera's voice is quiet as she approaches her father; their hazel eyes are wide with unease. She gestures to the horns poking up from a mass of dark brown coils, her fingers curling and uncurling in a scratching motion. ❝ They're itchy. ❞ 

ㅤㅤㅤ"Hello  my  Evataash--"  The  Iron  Bull  crouches  down  to  greet  his  daughter's  approach,  arms  open  so  that  she  might  step  into  them  if  she  wishes.  He  tucks  his  forearm  beneath  the  bend  of  her  legs,  then  lifts  Hissera  against  his  chest  as  he  straightens  back  up  (all  the  better  to  save  his  trick  ankle).  “--  what  seems  to  be  the  problem?”

ㅤㅤㅤBull  recognizes  her  instinctive  gesture  immediately,  a  sense-memory  that  seems  universal  to  Qunari  and  Vashoth  alike.  Baby's  First  Horns,  he  thinks  fondly.  Something  sentimental  rises  up  in  Iron  Bull's  chest,  making  his  throat  tighten  in  a  way  that  only  happens  now  that  he's  a  father.  Quickly,  the  Tal-Vashoth  clears  his  throat  and  palms  Hissera's  back  (so  small  his  fingers  span  from  shoulder  to  shoulder!),  rubbing  up  and  down  her  spine  to  sooth  her  distress. 

ㅤㅤㅤ“Growing  horns  can  feel  pretty  itchy,  huh?”  He  says,  commiserating.  Still  carrying  his  daughter,  Bull  heads  for  the  closed  chest  at  the  foot  of  the  bed.  He  leans  down  and  levers  it  open  with  the  curved  tip  of  his  right  horn,  a  party  trick  that  both  keeps  his  hands  free  to  hold  Hissera  and  elicits  a  giggle  from  the  child.  Grinning,  Iron  Bull  rubs  his  nose  into  the  dense  crown  of  Hissera's  curls.  “--  How  'bout  we  put  some  horn  oil  on  those  stubs,  huh  baby?”

Her stare is wide, muted green with a sunburst of gold in the middle. The little one is in awe through and through. A cautious look back to catch her mother who already holds a watchful eye, she glances to Ruby with a smile then gives Hissera an affirming nod. Eyes light up even more and they are quick to run up to Ruby and takes a daisy from the flower crown atop her head to present to the woman.

IT IS HARD NOT TO COMPARE THE DEAR girl to the child Jane had once been, with her green eyes and flower crown, and the eagerness to be kind. Something in her warms at the sight of the flower in her outstretched hands, and Ruby takes it with a rare warm smile. A certain sharpness remains ever-present in her features, no matter how gentle she tries to look, but the gleam in her eye belies the truth.

"Thank you, my dear. How very kind of you." She places the flower in one of the buttonholes of her coat, proudly displayed. "And I might say you are quite fetching yourself."
