The marriage of Ali (ra) and Fatima (ra)

'Ali (ra) lived in the house of the Prophet (saws) and saw Fatimah (ra), the daughter of the Prophet (saws). Just to look upon her brought comfort to Ali (ra). She was the Prophet's daughter, so she was naturally a shy demure girl who won his favor.

For her merit, and out of his love and gratefulness to the Prophet (saws), Ali (ra) married Fatimah (ra). She was fifteen years old when he married her, and he was ten years older than she was. All Ali could (ra) offer for a dowry was his armor which he had sold for five hundred and eighty dirhams. The Prophet (saws) gave his daughter an ordinary cot, a mattress stuffed with palm leaves, a water bag, two grinding stones and two earthen pitchers.  

Ali (ra) was one of the most profoundly knowledgeable and wise. Anas (ra) narrated that the Prophet (saws) said to his daughter Fatimah (ra):

"I have given you in marriage to the most intelligent, and the earliest who accepted Islam, and the most knowledgeable." (Siyar A'lam An-Nubala)

Abu Turab was one of the most beloved names to Ali (ra). He was pleased whenever he was called therewith. There was a story behind that name:

Allah's Messenger (saws) once came to the house of Fatimah (ra) but he did not find Ali (ra) there. He said: "Where is your husband?" Fatimah (ra) said: "We had words with each other and I became angry, so he went out and did not take a nap here." He said to a man: "Go and look for him." The man came and said: "O Allah's Messenger! He is sleeping in the mosque." Allah's Messenger (saws) went to the mosque where he found him sleeping while his garment had fallen from his side and it was covered with dust. Allah's messenger (saws) removed the dust from it while saying: "Get up Abu Turab. Get up Abu Turab." (Abu Turab means the father of dust) (Reported by Muslim.)

Although they were poor, Ali and Fatimah (ra) were happy. they were given sons and daughters: Al-hasan, Al-Husain, Muhsin, Zainab and Umm Kulthum (ra). She was his only wife until she died.

Reminder to Hardworking Muslimah (especially mothers/wives)

'Ali (RA) narrates that: 

"We had no servant in our house, and so Fatima (RA) did all the housework by herself. We lived in a house with just a small room. There, she would light a fire and try to cook. She often singed her clothes while trying to increase the fire by blowing. She also baked our bread and carried water. Her hands became covered in calluses from turning the millstone, as did her back from carrying water. Meanwhile some prisoners of war were brought to Madinah. The Messenger (SAW) gave them to those who applied. I suggested to Fatima (RA) that she ask for a servant from her father. And she did."

Fatima (RA) continues:

"I went to my father, but he was not at home. 'A'isha (RA) said she would tell him when he came, so I returned home. As soon as we went to bed, the Messenger came in. We wanted to get up, but he did not let us and instead sat between us. I could feel the cold of his foot on my body. He asked what we wanted, and I explained the situation. The Messenger (SAW) in an awesome manner, replied: "Fatima, fear God and be faultless in all your duties to Him. I will tell you something. When you want to go to bed, say SubhanAllah (All glory be to God), Alhamdulillah (All praise be to God), and AllahuAkbar (God is the greates) 33 times each. This is better for you than having a maid." [Narrated by Bukhari and Muslim]

What he (SAW) was actually saying through this conversation was:

I am turning your faces to the otherworldly realms. These are two ways for you to reach them and be together with me there; Fulfill your duties in perfect servitude to your Lord and fulfill your duties to your husband. If a maid takes your responsibilities, this may make you deficient. You must have two wings to fly to the higher ranks.

How can a man or woman become a perfect slave of God?

How can a person become a perfect human being and fulfill all of his or her obligations?

It is your duty to find the answers to these questions.

First of all, become a perfect slave of God.

Then, become a perfect human being by performing your duties to 'Ali, a great man who represents all the saints who will descend from your family.

If you do so, you will be with me in Heaven, where all the perfect things and perfect human beings shall come together.
