this is probably a late observation, but i'm in the middle of binging this is us for the first time and realizing that c$ers think neal is basically record store marc. and even leaving out the whole neal's age discourse, they couldn't be more wrong. it's still so bizarre to me how anyone could genuinely come away from ouat with *that* impression of neal, but at least now i understand *why* they feel so justified in hating him.
I’m realizing you’re absolutely right. Kate was barely 18, Mark was in his 20s. He took complete advantage of her. It’s the narrative antis have spread for 9 years.
Neal did none of that. In fact, all he wanted was to protect emma.
But speaking of SF and TIU…I absolutely fucking love that Jen’s character’s name is Cassidy. It’s not a callback to OUAT but I will take it. I guarantee it was one of Emma’s undercover names at one point.
i just finished the series, and even knowing how it ended in advance, i genuinely don't know how to react. the whole season plays like the writers were throwing everything up against the wall trying to see what stuck, but nothing did. and i mean, some episodes have 6 (!) writers credited, they moved the time slot...do you know if something weird was going on behind the scenes that caused the problems in s4?
I feel like there were a few factors that led to how messy season 4 was.
In the beginning WTH were pretty much devoted to Soap, with it being their only show until '79 and Susan Harris writing every episode of the first season. It was probably a lot for her (she also had a young child at the time) so it makes sense that they lightened the load and added a couple cowriters for the next two seasons. But, like you said, in season 4 there are episodes with up to 6 writers! I don't know the ins and outs of TV writing so I don't know if this was normal for other shows at the time, but it definitely seems like a case of too many cooks spoiling the soup. Some of these writers had worked with WTH before, but none of them were familiar with this show in the way that the people who had already been involved for 3 years were.
I also think WTH may have spread themselves too thin when they made Benson and I'm a Big Girl Now? Again, I don't know how all the behind-the-scenes stuff works, but I imagine that producing three shows at the same time, and having two main actors from the first show leave to star in the new shows, must have had an impact.
Also, in season 4, the amount of scenes they filmed in a week increased and they filmed them in a different order than they had before. I'm not sure why this changed, but it seems like it just added to the chaos. And on top of all of this, people were still protesting the show. So the threat of being censored, cancelled, and losing sponsors was always looming over them.
Also also, I got a lot of this info from A.S. Berman's book Soap: The Unauthorized Inside Story of the Sitcom that Broke All the Rules. Highly recommend for anyone who wants more behind-the-scenes stories.
speaking as a fellow h00k hater, if you hate the pirate now, it only gets worse from here on out. proceed at your own risk.
i’m very good at ignoring things and people and i unfortunately have a stupid brain that decides i must suffer through anything for the sake of pretty women so thank you, but endure i shall 🫠
hi, shannen. it's been a minute, but i was reliving some buffy nostalgia today and wondering if watching tvd for the first time at 28 is worth it lol. and by this i mean that i remember you saying a while back that tvd is one of those shows that might not hit for you the same way if you saw it for the first time now. i realized today that at the end of the day i'll always kind of be "meh" about btvs since all the platonic relationships (i.e. buffy and giles, dawn, faith, etc.) always grabbed me more than the love triangle. is it worth it starting tvd after liking but not necessarily loving btvs? is it worth it just to see what everyone on this site is talking about (i use the word is because of legacies lol)? some of it looks interesting but i'm not looking forward to the love triangle.
Hey Fatmia! It has been a while. I hope you’ve been well.
Tbh, there’s no simple answer to your question because there’s so many factors to take into consideration when deciding whether or not to watch TVD. So please bear with me whilst I break this down.
Reasons to watch TVD
TVD has a lot of great aspects to it:
A strong cast of characters
Well written character arcs
Interesting plots
A great setting
A distinct TVD aesthetc that I just love in terms of music, tone, setting and production
Lots of great relationships (platonic and romantic)
Intruiging lore and perspectives on the supernatural
If you’re a fan of the vampire genre, TVD is well worth a watch because it plays with the genre in a fun way and does some interesting stuff with it. Although it’s commonly perceived as a typical “teen” show, it goes beyond that. @sulietsexual watched TVD for the first time two years ago and it was interesting to see her views as someone going in to the show with a completely fresh perspective. She made a great video essay on this topic and spoke about how her perceptions of TVD changed after she watched the show. She also addresses the triangle and how she felt that it was written and handled well. Although I don’t necessarily agree with all her views, my history with the fandom and attachment to Stelena as a ship is so entrenched that this hugely impacts my perspective of the triangle so I’m really not the best person to ask. So if you don’t mind spoilers, I’d recommend watching the video to get an idea of the redeeming qualities of TVD.
Reasons not to watch TVD
But like any show, for all its good, there’s also bad:
The quality goes downhill from Season 4 onwards
A lot of the original cast (and best characters) leave
Some characters are done a huge injustice
Some poor relationship choices
If you are a big shipper and strongly dislike triangles, that in itself might be a reason not to watch. Although there’s a triangle on BTVS, it exists more within the fandom than on the show itself. When Buffy is with Angel, they’re exclusive and Spike is a supporting character. By the time Buffy and Spike become canon, Angel has moved to L.A and has his own show, so the two relationships exist separately from one another. In comparison, the triangle on TVD is established in Season 1 and continues until Season 4 and there’s a lot of emphasis on it, particularly in Seasons 3 and 4. The triangle is used as a way to provide the Salvatore brothers with character development and is very central to their relationship with each other. Whereas the BTVS triangle is never really part of the narrative or development of the characters in the same way.
However, I do feel that the triangle in TVD is handled well in a lot of ways. I just personally didn’t like the way it was handled from Season 4 onwards. And that’s not just because my ship wasn’t endgame but for a lot of other reasons. Putting that aside, it is an interesting, well-built triangle and the dynamics between Elena, Damon and Stefan are fascinating and believable. I actually really liked the triangle in some ways (and wrote a whole fanfiction about it!) but there were some choices were made that I disliked.
Comparing TVD and BTVS
In terms of comparing TVD and BTVS as a whole, they are very different shows and your feelings towards BTVS won’t necessarily have any impact on your enjoyment of TVD. I like both shows but for very different reasons. BTVS is an older show (it aired in 1997 and TVD in 2009) with a more comedic, young and simplistic tone and premise. TVD feels like a more mature, complex show to me. It also has a more developed lore and nuanced perspective on morality and vampires. Overall, if you’re looking at the two shows in their entirety I’d say BTVS is stronger because I really dislike the later seasons of TVD, but I think that Seasons 1-3 of TVD are better than the whole of BTVS. There’s genuinely not a single thing I dislike about the early seasons of TVD but with BTVS, I love a handful of episodes and the rest is just a middle of the ground “good” for me.
Conclusion
I still think TVD is worth the watch. The fandom soured a lot of things for me back in the day, but it has changed a lot over the years and is a generally positive fandom to be part of. Watching it now so many years after it ended and when the fandom is less active will all work in your favour. Although the triangle might be off-putting, it is one of the better triangle’s I’ve seen in terms of the perspective it brings to the characters and their relationships. There are also a lot of other things to love about the show. Despite not enjoying the later seasons, I’m glad I watched the show if only for the great characters like Katherine, Klaus, Rebekah and Stefan. There are also a lot of incredible platonic ships on the show, so if you’re a fan of platonic ships, there’s a lot of them for you to enjoy. If you dislike it or the triangle becomes too much, you can stop watching. But if you’re curious about the show I say give it a go and see what you think.

finnrey shipper/anti r*ylo here. i generally don't have a problem with ships like r*ylo in principle. it's dark, it's fucked up, and there are a few darkships i enjoy when i'm in the mood. but what really pisses me off is when people try to romanticize these obviously abusive dynamics, or especially, (like r*ylos do), try to shield their ship from criticism by claiming it's "feminist"or whatever. shipping is supposed to be fun. it wish they would just say they like it because they think (1/2)
(2/2) adam driver is hot. people have shipped far more obscure pairings with far less of a basis than that. the only reason r*ylos couch their bullshit in fake woke language is because they think people who genuinely enjoy characters of color like finn and poe are being as disingenuous as they are. they literally cannot imagine people just genuinely liking diverse content without some kind of "agenda" behind it. /sorry i just had to vent.

Yeah, you echo my feelings pretty much exactly.
The problem isn’t the ship itself. There’s nothing wrong with having a dark ship, and what we ship doesn’t represent real life values.
But there’s something about Reylo as a fandom, that so many fans seem so adamant not to acknowledge that Reylo IS a dark ship.
They’ll bend over backwards to tell us how the pairing isn’t abusive, how Kylo didn’t abduct, torture, manipulate and psychically stalk Rey. He’s a misunderstood hero. She’s not a victim, and so on and so forth. It’s infuriating.
They can’t seem to understand that their tastes are not universal, and they have no respect for that.
My issue has never been the ship, it’s always been the shippers and their very bad behavior.
so i just wanted to thank you for all of your great swanfire meta. he more i look back, i'm sad and angry not because we never saw them get married, go on a date, or even kiss once they were reunited. we knew they always loved each other so those things weren't as important. no, what still pisses me off is that we never got to see emma, neal, and henry really be a family. neal stepped up literally the second he learned that henry existed, and they deserved to have each other in their lives.
another neal stan! hi, friend! i love this for me!
and i feel you. it’s not about having a neal/emma endgame even if it’s how it should’ve been--their story was too tragic and poetic to be anything else than endgame but it’s more about neal and how he didn’t get to spend the rest of his life or at least more time with his family when family was the most important thing to him.
i’ll never get over the fact that milah and rumpled gave up on him, and bae ended up in the land without magic and sacrificed his second chance at happiness and family for the darlings so their family wouldn’t be torn apart like his had been torn apart. sure neal dying to save his family was very in character for him, that’s what he does (i’ll fight whoever says neal did only one good thing in his life and it was leading h*ok to emma): putting people’s safety and happiness before his. he was selfless, good and kind. however, his story was unfinished, and the writers were coward for killing him off.
