It’s kind of crazy to think about how much life I’ve lived. I mean I’m 24, but I feel much younger and newer to the whole being alive thing on the inside. Like, I’m still a very small child inside.
But, other times, I feel totally ancient and like time has dragged on forever. I’m so tired and I can feel the years piling up on my shoulders. What’s funny about this dichotomy is that I’ve never felt like I’m doing the right thing in either instance, or that I’m a fully actualized adult person with a whole life left in either instance.
The chaos of the last three years both personally and with the onset of the pandemic has eroded a lot of who I thought I was, the plans I had set up or the goals I wanted to achieve. The hardest part of it all has been realizing that while I know I want something different than what I have currently, I don’t know what it actually is that I want. A lot of the questions I ask myself to figure that out have the same answer, “I don’t know.”
So much of my life has been lived with expectations and ideas of how things should be that were passed on to me by other adults in my life. Another difficult part of being an adult is breaking those molds, or abandoning the rigid structure I thought I needed to keep in my life, and figuring out what’s best for me. Maybe I don’t wake up at 5AM everyday and do ten things before I start work, or have a set schedule for chores. Maybe I don’t operate on a strict schedule, the way I previously thought I should, and that’s ok.
I’ve had to learn that I’m not here to live by anyone else’s standards, societal or otherwise. I’m here to live a meaningful life, whatever that means for me. I’m the only person living my life, so why would I try to live exactly like everyone else?
With that, here is a short list of what I want at some point in my life:
- Living with or near my friends, in the same city or state
- Moving to a city that is vibrant with many smaller neighborhoods
- Spending less time on my phone
- Working a job where I get to make meaningful and helpful things
- Creating a solid balance between work and hobbies
- Getting out in to nature with friends
- Feeling more energized and alert
- Travelling and learning about different cultures/histories
