Kamelot’s Epica and the Black Halo (Faust parts 1 and 2 in metal form)

In honor of Walpurgisnacht here’s one of my favorite modern adaptations of Faust.  (Still set in the middle ages.)

Kamelot’s Epica and The Black halo tell the story of Goethe’s Faust and Faust part 2 when played in order.  The only big difference is Heinrich Faust’s first name is changed to Ariel and Marguerite (nicknamed Gretchen) is changed to Helena.  Mephisto’s name is left alone.

I like adaptations that have parts 1 and 2 because Faust’s soul is ultimately saved and so few people know Goethe’s version actually has a sort of happy ending with Gretchen and Heinrich (Helen and Ariel) reunited in Heaven.

Walpurgisnacht in literature

Two classic works of Gothic literature have important scenes set today (Walpurgisnacht).  The first is Goethe's Faust Parts 1 and 2.  And the second is Dracula's Guest.

Hey everyone!

Did you miss me? Probably not, seeing as I literally just posted the end of the first installment in this series. Ah, well!

The next book I'm reading is Goethe's Faust, parts 1 and 2, translated by David Luke.

I've already finished part one, so I'll.put my thoughts here:

I've overall enjoyed it so far. The verse is a bit difficult to read at times, but that's to be expected in a book like this. It's interesting seeing how this story has influenced so much of popular culture these days, and seeing how the story has changed over time.

This edition seems to be more geared towards people who have already read the story before, as the explanatory notes give a lot away as to the plot before it happens (I mean, it is a 200 year old book, but I still didn't like being spoiled for specific scenes that were coming up), and it has a lengthy introduction to both parts, each totalling over 50 pages before both parts.

My thoughts on the story:

It's really well done! I've been rather enjoying both the tragedy and the comedy in it. I actually cried while reading the prison scene at the end of the first part. It's well done, and it's no mystery why this is a classic. I hope part two won't change my opinion on all this, though!
