Whenever I get asked what is my favourite lens, there is always one answer: HELIOS 44-2 58mm F2. If you haven't experienced the magic of the lens, why haven't you? The price definitely shouldn't stop you as you can buy one of these for under $50 on eBay and if you get lucky, you might even snap one up for a few $/€/£ in a thrift/charity shop or a carboot/garage sale. Over the last few years I've tried at least 10 of these lenses and although in terms of sharpness they were surprisingly similar (Russian lenses are known to be inconsistent in optical quality), almost each of them had a different character in a way how they interacted with direct light. In the end I kept just 2 of these lenses, both wonderful in a different way, but until today I didn't realise the reason why these 2 produce a different look. I knew that one has white markings, while the other has more common, yellow ones, but I thought that simply had to do with the year of production. I only realised the real reason why they produce a different look when I lined them up together to take the picture you see above; the coatings are different and the reason why they are different is because they were produced at the different factories. The left one was produced at the KMZ factory and the right one was made by VOLDAI factory (see logos next to the left side of the lenses). The KMZ lens produces warmer, a bit more uncontrollable flares, while VOLDAI lens has a bit more control and also adds beautiful blue ring flares into the mix while keeping the overall flares pleasant and warm. I highly recommend that you try either of these. Helios 44-2 is absolute must-have for any photographer or cinematographer! What do you think about the lens?
