It's not 'screwing around,' it's 'practice.'

Well, maybe a little bit of screwing around. But if the boss asks, it's practice.

After @sirfrogsworth posted on his wide-angle lens earlier, I was like, "hey, I just got myself a wide-angle zoom lens, let's see what I get photographing tonight's lunch!"

So with the 17-35mm f/2.8D lens in place, and the flash on, I got some interesting results.

Camera straight on, flash straight on. I'm maybe six six inches away from the subject, if that. So close, the lens itself is casting a shadow.

Take 2, flash 45 degrees up. The overhang of the cabinets behind the subject provide for a surface to bounce off of. It'll become more noticeable later.

And 90 degrees. Maybe I should've tried the bounce card here, too.

Moving on to another view.

Straight flash.

45 degree flash. The cabinet turns the flash into a backlight.

90 degrees.

And 90.

There's a lot of room to experiment here. Stay tuned.

I planned this shot before we left for the beach. The lifeguard stand became a silhouette while trying to photograph it with the sunrise. I used a Nikon SB900 with a CTO gel to splash some light onto the stand and make it stand out. Beautiful morning!
