「 where do you go when you're lonely?
where do you go when you're blue?」
the video starts with individual shots of the pandas, one disappearing as the background fading from white to a midnight blue, as if being painted by hand, shot by shot.
a shadow looms over the scene, dancing forlornly against the wall until—
❝ dancing where the stars go blue
dancing where the evening fell
dancing in my wooden shoes
in a wedding gown ❞
stars begin to fill in the midnight sky, lights strewn across the wall as tiffany walks in, the ivory lace of her dress trailing behind her before she takes a seat, panda on her lap.
❝ dancin' out on 7th street
dancin' on the underground
dancin' little marionette
are you happy now? ❞
the screen splits, footsteps languid in pace as they click, clack against cobblestone, panning up to show kevin, eyes clouded unlike the clear sky above him.
❝ where do you go when you're lonely? ❞
he sings to the camera, the shot fading,
fading,
fading . . .
to blue
❝ where do you go when you're blue?
where do you go when you're lonely?
i'll follow you . . . when the stars go blue
when the stars go blue ❞
he's searching for something, aimlessly, maybe pointlessly, but he's walking regardless. never ceasing his stride.
❝ laughing with your pretty mouth
laughing with your broken eyes
laughing with your lover's tongue
in a lullaby ❞
it's a flashback, it must be, tiffany's cheeks flush with laughter as kevin walks alongside her, arm around her shoulder but the moment's fleeting.
and chocolate orbs give way to a dull shade of black, devoid of joy.
❝ where do you go when you're lonely?
where do you go when you're blue?
where do you go when you're lonely?
i'll follow you ❞
the room's empty now, the last panda just as gone as tiffany and it's being pulled with her as she runs, the cobblestone familiar as she turns onto another street.
❝ where do you go when you're lonely?
where do you go when you're blue?
where do you go when you're lonely?
i'll follow you ❞
found, it's found, it seems. the other panda is found, seated on a bench beside kevin who continues to sing.
❝ when the stars go blue
when the stars go blue
when the stars go blue
where do you go when you're lonely? ❞
no longer alone, they're reunited.
a matching pair.
neither tiffany or kevin are to be found but . . . the stars in that empty room fade again.
