Do you ever think about how so much of Favor and Rowdy's dynamic is teaching the boy to manage without him?

Mr. Favor takes Rowdy everywhere, when might just as well leave him to watch the herd and learn from Pete.

But he's got bigger plans for this kid, and his first lesson is always learn to do it without me.

Rowdy spends days being sore at Mr. Favor in Incident of the Coyote Weed, because a kid younger than him got left behind to the worst. Rowdy didn't just see himself in that kid, he saw the look in Favor's eyes as he turned away to his duty.

Rowdy and Favor together on their last night as Boss and Ramrod, before Rowdy goes off to be his own boss, and Gil thinks they'll never see each other again, so they finally give into their pent up feelings in a night of wild passion and angst

Only to find out the next morning that Rowdy's job has fallen through and he's back to being Favor's ramrod

Rowdy moves the herd out after a brief stop in town to consult with Favor; a conversation that consisted of “I’m doing it anyway and if you try to come with us before you’re recovered, so help me-” followed by a series of creative threats.

“Rowdy,” Favor stops him with a longsuffering look. “You don’t have to put out a wanted poster on my head to keep me off my own drive. You’re a good ‘nough ramrod, I trust you for a few days. Now get going.” he urges, “Y’ve wasted enough time stopping in to lecture me!”
