i've been seeing so much about this anime recently...i'm tempted to check it out, do you think i should watch the original first or is it fine to start with the newer version?
Mmmm....I do think it’s fine to start with this newer version first and then branch out into the older material - I did. I only really started diving into the “classic” devilman stuff after I watched Crybaby, and I only had a basic understanding of plot and characters beforehand, having only seen snippets of the older animes and manga, so it’s fine either way.
If you want to, the two animated films, Devilman: The Birth (which I have seen) and Devilman: Demon Bird Sirene (which I haven’t yet) are both older films that, from what I’ve seen, pretty closely follow the original manga up until the point where Akira as Devilman fights the titular Sirene of the second film. Both have english dubs and you could conceivably find both on your anime streaming sight of choice. Because they follow the original manga, and don’t stray into fix-it-fic territory like the original 70s anime does, they would offer you the full experience of the devilman story - up until a certain point in the manga.
BUT! I’d say you might want to watch Crybaby first if you don’t feel like going in to judge it as a Devilman adaptation first and it’s own thing second. prior knowledge of the series, even as little as i has, soured Crybaby a bit for me, so I’d say you might want to see Crybaby first, then the original stuff and then decide which one fits your taste better.
If you go that way though, I personally recommend the japanese sub over the english dub on netflix if you don’t mind reading subtitles while watching your anime, because I find the voice work more natural and less grating. again, a streaming site should have all the episodes in both sub and dub if you don’t have access to netflix.
I will say that the new series has far more nudity and explicit but not overly graphic content tho. Crybaby is very NSFW and the first episode throws you right into it, where as the older animes are much more tame, so go in warned. nudity, body horror, blood,gore, and sexual content
