It’s become somewhat routine; Sunday mornings on the single weekend each month that Mal is granted a visit with his son the two of them make a trip to the park to meet with Violet and her little boy.  Mark is much older than Jamie, but his developmental issues are such that the children seem to play very well together.  Mark looks forward to it...and truth be told, so does Malcolm--parenting a special needs child is hard, even just for an occasional weekend, and the brief reprieve before he has to make the long drive back to Atlanta to return Mark to his ex-wife is often overdue by the time it rolls around.  This Sunday would have been much the same, except that it’s not.  When Mal shows up to the park bright and early to meet with Violet on the shady side of the playground, he is conspicuously alone.  “Morning...sorry I’m late,” he greets.  “I woulda’ texted, ‘cept I figured you might already be on your way.  Didn’t want ya’ t’ think I stood ya’ up.  Had t’ take Mark home t’ his momma’ this mornin’.”  If the dark circles under his eyes are any indication, it was a long night and a very early morning.  “--I don’t think he’s gonna’ be comin’ t’ stay with me again for a while.”

Hayden walked across campus, a takeout container of coffee in each hand as she struggled with the door to the Kappa Gamma house. As usual, she had been lounging in bed scrolling through her twitter feed when she stumbled across some interesting, or devastating, news about her friend. It wasn’t that it was devastating to Hayden but she could only imagine how Violet felt right now. “Thanks.” She half-sincerely mumbled when one of the sorority sisters opened the door for her before she strode up the stairs to Violet’s room. “Knock, knock.” She softly called out as she pushed the bedroom door open with her foot. “I don’t know about you-” Hayden leaned her hip  against the frame as she held the coffee cups up, “But I’ve taken on this new routine of not sleeping and caffeine usually helps with out so... also, I figured you could use a friend. So hi, friend.”

Vi’s perseverance has always helped me through so many things. She is very much the backbone of our family and when she wasn’t here it was hard to pick up that strength. I’ve learned a lot from it.

I’m jealous of her strength at times. She went through a lot more than I did and still goes through it but she still finds herself carrying on. I wish I had that.

When I first met Vi, I saw the same thing I was feeling when I first stepped into Crownsville. The same lost and scared expression on hers and Yakov’s face but then I also so this hope in her eyes that was hidden behind the fear. She wanted better and more and if anyone could relate to that it was me.
