"What happened doesn’t change anything." - Gavyn & Tyro
“I understand,” Tyro started diplomatically. He stood formally, as was proper, as they had always been instructed. Feet facing forward, back straight, muscles tense and at the ready. He could almost feel the fabric of his robes, the belt at his hips, the tabard resting over his shoulders, hair pulled tightly into a tall ponytail at the back of his head. Almost. Instead the position felt awkward as he remembered to not lock his knees in his torn up pants patched so many times now they were practically a fashion statement again, tried to keep his arms still lest the leather of his jacket squeaked at the joints, and as he bowed his head forward to continue, missed the feeling of the weight of his hair, now reduced to a boring blond fluff. “I understand if you need to spend more time with Comm—” could he still call him that? “Ace, Master.”
The last word caught him too, suddenly feeling off in his mouth for the first time in over a year. He looked up to Gavyn for an answer. He was still his Master, right? “I can work on my own for a while. I’ll study and look at the reports and only bother you with the summaries and finish my unit’s battle pla-” Tyro cut himself short suddenly realizing what he was saying. “I’ll keep myself busy,” he settled on. How often had he assured Gavyn that he would do those things, either to let him know what was up, or admittedly to get out of more work by making himself seem busy? But now there were no reports or battle plans, or even studying. He was not a Commander anymore, there was no war. There was no Jedi order anymore either, which by extension really only meant one thing.
He was afraid to ask. A Jedi was not afraid but… “Master…Jervada? Am I still your—” Tyro did not have a chance to finish before Gavyn scooped him up in his arms hugging him tightly.
Gavyn held him there for a long moment before Tyro finally looked up to meet his eyes. “What happened doesn’t change anything,” his Master said firmly, catching Tyro’s gaze and holding it there with a hand under his chin. As big as Tyro thought had got in the last year his feet still did not touch the floor when Gavyn picked him up, and his Master could still hold him tightly in one arm as though he weighed next to nothing. “You are still my Padawan, and I will always be your Master.”
Tyro watched him for a second longer before burying his face in Gavyn’s robe—jacket rather now, hugging him tightly back. He felt Gavyn shift his hand to run it through his short hair and relaxed slightly. Perhaps it was not so bad, and it matched Gavyn’s now too. Gavyn squeezed Tyro tightly once more before setting him back down, his huge grin matching the one on Tyro’s face. “And you still have to study.”
